I have upgraded my OS from XP to Win 7-64 and can't figure out if my monitor is set up correctly.

I have a NEC 20WMGX2 installed and Win 7 shows it (the model name) on "Devices and Printers" and "Screen Resolution" screens but when I go into Device Manager, under monitors is listed "Generic PnP Monitor" If I try to update the driver through Device Manager for the monitor by selecting the one I downloaded from the manufacturers page (.inf and .icc files), I get a message saying "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date" and shows the "Generic PnP Monitor".

How can I tell if my monitor is really "installed" or not? How do you install monitor drives?

TIA for any and all help!

Solution
When upgrading your operating system from Windows XP to Windows 7, ensuring that your monitor is set up correctly is key to optimal display performance. In your case, it seems like Windows 7 is recognizing your NEC 20WMGX2 monitor by name in some places but is listing it as a "Generic PnP Monitor" in Device Manager. Here's how you can check if your monitor is properly installed and how to install monitor drivers:

Checking if Monitor is Installed:

  1. Devices and Printers & Screen Resolution:
    • If your monitor model name appears correctly in "Devices and Printers" and "Screen Resolution" settings, it likely means that Windows recognizes the monitor.
    []Device Manager:

    []Device Manager:
    • Seeing "Generic PnP Monitor" in Device Manager could sometimes be the default label used for certain monitors. However, Windows should ideally show the specific model name.

Installing Monitor Drivers:

To ensure that the monitor is using the correct drivers and settings, here's how you can attempt to install the monitor drivers:
  1. Manual Driver Update:
    • Since the automatic driver update through Device Manager isn't recognizing the driver you downloaded, try manually installing it:
      • Right-click on the "Generic PnP Monitor" in Device Manager.
      • Select "Update Driver Software" and then choose "Browse my computer for driver software."
      • Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the .inf and .icc files for your monitor.
      • Select the folder and proceed with the driver installation.
    [
  1. ]Color Profile Installation:
    • The .icc file you downloaded is likely a color profile for your monitor. You can manually apply this color profile to ensure accurate color representation:
      • Right-click on the desktop and choose "Screen resolution."
      • Click on "Advanced settings" and navigate to the "Color Management" tab.
      • Add the color profile you downloaded and set it as the default profile for your monitor.

        Confirming Installation:

After following the above steps, you can confirm if your monitor is correctly installed by:
        • Checking if Windows now recognizes and lists your NEC 20WMGX2 monitor correctly in Device Manager.
        • Verifying that the monitor functions as expected and that the display settings match its specifications.
By manually installing the drivers and adjusting the color profile, you should be able to ensure that your monitor is set up correctly on Windows 7. If you encounter any further issues, feel free to seek additional assistance.
