Japanese government has failed to decontaminate Fukushima: Greenpeace
In a critical report, Greenpeace has revealed that the Japanese government's efforts to decontaminate the Fukushima area have been insufficient, following a comprehensive evaluation by radiation experts. This assessment comes precisely nine years after the catastrophic nuclear disaster triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. As Japan prepares for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, concerns surrounding radiation levels in the region remain high.
Greenpeace's findings stem from three weeks of fieldwork, which identified dangerously elevated levels of cesium, particularly in residential areas bordering a local forest. These levels were exacerbated by Typhoon Hagupit, which brought strong winds and heavy rains that conspired to spread radioactive materials. Alarmingly, 45 hotspots have been detected in downtown Fukushima, many of which exceed the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) safety standards, with some readings reaching as high as 71 microsieverts per hour.
Sean Bernie, a nuclear expert from Greenpeace, underscores the discrepancy between the government’s messaging—promoting Fukushima as a safe location for Olympic activities—and the harsh reality reported by independent assessments. Although the plant's operator has asserted that contaminated topsoil has been removed, the prevalence of hotspots raises significant safety concerns.
As the 2020 Olympic torch relay is set to begin in areas close to these hazardous zones, the true safety of hosting events in and around Fukushima remains contentious. Greenpeace's report serves as a stark reminder that despite official claims, the region may not be as secure as portrayed.
In light of this eye-opening situation, what are your thoughts on the government's response to the ongoing safety issues? Do you think more independent assessments are necessary, especially with international events on the horizon? Let’s discuss!
