A plucky candidate listed the Almighty as a referee on his CV, which joins a long list of silly things employers have read on job applications recently, according to a survey by careerbuilder.co.uk. Read on to find out just how silly.
The careers website questioned 700 companies, who revealed an absolute treasure trove of blunders by potential candidates.
Well, they were potential up until the point where bosses read their CVs.
One candidate boldly claimed that his experience included being Master Of Time And Universe while another listed the Vikings as his direct descendants.
There can be few jobs, surely, where it would be necessary to include such a flamboyant piece of fiction. At present, there are no firms needing to fill any Pillager-in-Chief roles. At least not that we know of.
Others took a less imaginative route to completely ruining their chances of employment. One person simply listed their name and address and wrote underneath it: ‘I want a job.’
Obviously that’s not really the way to sell yourself. And neither is using an email address called ‘lovesbeer’. Or specifically pointing out, as one job hunter did, that he 'was not a gypsy'.
What employers do want, according to the survey, are applications that highlight a track record in problem solving, efficient communication skills and computer-software know-how.
'You want to stack the deck in your favour when writing a CV,' said Tony Roy, president of CareerBuilder EMEA. 'Make sure to highlight key accomplishments with quantifiable results, so employers can see how you put your skills into action. It’s also important to remember that employers often use electronic devices to screen and rank CVs. Pepper in keywords from the job ad into your CV as it relates to your experience to improve your ranking.'
