Windows 7 Laptop audio connection to projector

The sound from external speakers is muffled unless I pull the connecting-wire plug halfway out of the laptop's audio port. But when I do that the cable doesn't stay in place unless I hold it.

What explains this? What is the fix?

Details:

I have a Dell Studio 15, with Windows 7 64bit, video card=512mb ATI HD 4570, sound=High Definition Audio 2.0.

I run video & audio out to a ceiling-mounted projector & speakers with a cable that goes from the laptop into the wall. The laptop has two outputs marked with headphone symbols that seem to be the same.

Laptops normally have one headset and one microphone port. If you have enhanced audio, possibly the ports are not actually as marked but have different options.

If you pull a stereo plug part way out, you are probably only running one channel.

Does it work normally if a headset it plugged in?

If it plugs into the wall, have you checked your wiring from the wall to the projector?
