HOUSTON -- A Houston-area man has been arrested and charged with brutally attacking his 33-year-old estranged wife, who survived a 17-hour ordeal in which she was tortured and mutilated.

Harris County sheriff's officials said Gregoria Longoria Jr., 39, kidnapped his wife on Wednesday and held her against her will until the next morning.
Court documents showed that the attack happened inside his north Houston apartment. Investigators said Longoria picked up his wife and 1-year-old daughter from her parents' home and forced her to come to his apartment by threatening to kill her elderly parents.
Investigators said that during the ordeal, Longoria tied his wife to a bed, beat her and tortured her with fire in a private part of her body.
Court documents said the victim's chest and private areas were disfigured to the point that she will need reconstructive surgery.
Sheriff Adrian Garcia said it was a "horrendous, horribly masochistic" act.
"The whole time he's torturing this lady, the baby was there in the apartment. He had the baby asleep on the couch in the next room. Probably listening to her own mother's screams for help. He didn't care -- flat didn't care," said Lt. Ruben Diaz with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said the woman escaped after she lied and said she needed to leave for a job interview. Officials said he dropped her off at her parents' home and the sheriff's office was called for help.
Longoria was arrested Thursday night on Aldine Mail Route.
Longoria was charged with aggravated sexual assault and is being held in the Harris County Jail.
The sheriff said the quick work in this case should serve as a warning to abusers.
"These dogs have to be put away and put down. It is an important message that we can win with your support, communicating that this is not acceptable," Garcia said.
