On June 12, 2025, a significant internet outage disrupted numerous major websites and services, including Google, Spotify, Discord, and YouTube. The disruption began around 2 p.m. EDT, with Downdetector reporting widespread service issues across various platforms. Users encountered difficulties accessing services such as Snapchat, OpenAI, Character AI, Fubo, Etsy, Vimeo, UPS, Shopify, Microsoft Azure, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Google Gemini, DoorDash, Calendly, Paramount+, IKEA, Twitch, and Microsoft 365.
Cloudflare, a prominent IT service management company, initially announced that several of its services were experiencing intermittent failures. The company later updated that some services were beginning to recover, though intermittent errors might persist as systems handled retries and caches were replenished.
Google Cloud, which provides cloud computing services for numerous products, acknowledged the issue on its status page around 3:40 p.m. EDT. Engineers identified the root cause and applied appropriate mitigations. However, they noted that customers were still experiencing varying degrees of impact across individual Google Cloud products and did not provide an estimated time for full service recovery.
In a statement to CNN, a Cloudflare representative attributed the outage to Google Cloud, mentioning that a limited number of Cloudflare services using Google Cloud were impacted but were expected to recover shortly. Google directed inquiries to their public status dashboard for updates.
Late Thursday night, Cloudflare reported that the outage lasted 2 hours and 28 minutes, caused by a failure in the underlying storage infrastructure used by their Workers KV service. Both Cloudflare and Google services have since resumed normal operations.
This incident underscores the vulnerabilities inherent in the internet's infrastructure, where issues within a single service provider can cascade, affecting a multitude of dependent services and platforms.
