Windows Vista Maximize Windows Issues

I have Windows Vista Home Basic 64 installed and I enjoy using the sidebar. However I have one small problem, when I maximize my windows they always go behind the sidebar. My sidebar is transparent which i like, however it makes it hard to see all of the window i am currently viewing. I also would like my sidebar to always be on top of everything. What I want is for my windows to expand to the side of the sidebar if possible. I have checked with microsofts website and it says it should do that automatically. Any ideas?
