Microsoft patching up Windows shortcut vulnerability today

Later today, at 10 AM PDT (5 PM UTC), Microsoft is set to release an out of band update that will address the Windows Shell bug that enables malicious code to be executed when a user clicks the displayed icon of a specially crafted shortcut.

Usually Microsoft has Patch Tuesday (the second Tuesday of every month) for rolling out updates but in this case the Redmond company is not going to wait that long since the patch has been tested and approved and, unfortunately, there has been a rise in attempts to exploit the vulnerability.

The software affected by the bug includes Windows XP, Vista, 7, Server 2003 and
Server 2008 (R2)
