I just installed a Linux distro based on Ubuntu 9.04.
It is very user friendly. I don't like the Start Menu, but that's easily changed by choosing the Gnome Desktop.
I used a program called to install on my flash drive.
You need to check the BIOS for Enable USB or make sure the 3rd boot device is set to Removable. When you use Ubooten, do not use the drop-down menu, click the ISO radio button and navigate to the ISO file.
Many versions of Linux are available to boot from your USB flash drive.
