A red Tibetan Mastiff puppy has become the most expensive dog in the world after being sold for a sum many would consider barking mad: £945,000.
For that amount of money you’d expect the hound to not only fetch your slippers and a paper, but make dinner and do the washing up afterwards.
The dog in question was bought by a multi-millionaire coal baron in China for 10 million Chinese yuan, which is close to £1million.
He’s called Big Splash, or Hong Dong in Chinese, and has an appetite that’s almost as big as his price tag.
He weighs in at around 180lbs, despite being just 11 months old, and eats bowlfuls of chicken and beef, along with cod liver oil and raw bones to keep his teeth in prime condition.
His breeder, Mr Lu Liang, told the Daily Telegraph: 'He is a perfect specimen. He has excellent genes and will be a good breeding dog. When I started in this business, ten years ago, I never thought we would see such a price.'
The breed has been used down the years to guard flocks of sheep, villages and temples in Tibet as they are powerful animals with a sometimes ferocious temperament.
They have been known to tackle predators as big as wolves and leopards.
Tibetan Mastiffs have always fetched huge price tags, partly because they are considered holy animals in China and are used by the wealthy as a status symbol. Plus, red is considered a lucky colour, so Big Splash ticks all the boxes.
The question is, is there a lead strong enough to contain him?
