Hi all

I want to transfer the data - email, contacts, calendar and accounts for both gmail and my ISP - from one system to another (I built a new computer, this one has a nasty habit of going off.) I don't use/want stationery etc

I'm using Outlook 2010 64bit, and Windows 7 64bit SP1 on both systems.

Does or does not the Easy Transfer tool do this for me? I have read that it will, or won't. I've also read insanely convoluted procedures to move the required files around and get Outlook to recognise them properly. I don't think it helps that Outlook keeps its files in (at least) two different places, %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Outlook Files and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

A definitive answer would be very helpful. I haven't even finished building the new machine yet, so having or not having started Outlook isn't an issue. I just want it to work.

Transferring data like email, contacts, calendar, and accounts from one system to another, especially when changing computers, can be a crucial process. Here's a detailed answer to your query:

Transferring Data from Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 64-bit:

  1. Easy Transfer Tool: The Windows Easy Transfer tool is primarily designed for transferring files, photos, music, documents, and user profiles between two Windows computers. Unfortunately, it doesn't directly support transferring Outlook data like emails, contacts, calendar, etc., especially for Outlook 2010.

Therefore, you cannot rely on the Easy Transfer tool alone for this specific task.
  2. Outlook Data Files Location: Outlook 2010 typically saves its data in PST and OST files, which are stored in specific locations on your computer. The default locations you mentioned, %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Outlook Files (for PST files) and %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook (for other data), are important for locating and transferring your Outlook data.

Steps to Transfer Outlook Data Manually:

To transfer your Outlook 2010 data from one system to another, you can follow these steps:
  3. Locate Outlook Data Files:
    • Search for and make a note of your Outlook data files (PST and OST) in the current system.
[]Copy Outlook Data Files to New Computer:
    • Copy the PST and other Outlook data files to a safe location like an external drive to transfer to the new computer.
    [
    ]Configure Outlook on New Computer:
    • Install Outlook 2010 on your new computer.
    • Ensure that you configure your email accounts in Outlook first.
  4. Import Outlook Data:
    • Open Outlook on the new computer.
    • Go to "File" > "Open & Export" > "Import/Export."
    • Choose "Import from another program or file" and click Next.
    • Select "Outlook Data File (.pst)" and browse to the location where you stored your PST file.
    • Follow the steps to complete the import process.

      Notes for a Smooth Transfer:

      • Make sure both computers have the same version of Outlook (64-bit in your case).
      • Always back up your data before starting the transfer process.
      • It's recommended to export data files using the Outlook Import/Export wizard to maintain data integrity during the transfer.
By following these steps, you should be able to successfully transfer your Outlook data, including emails, contacts, calendar, and accounts, from one computer to another. If you encounter any issues during the process, feel free to ask for further assistance. Good luck with setting up your new computer!
