Solution
It seems like you are experiencing performance issues with your HP HDX18t laptop after installing Windows 7 Ultimate. The symptoms you described, such as intermittent lockups and high CPU usage even when the total process usage is less than 100%, can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for Windows Updates:
    • Make sure your Windows 7 installation is fully up to date. Sometimes, updates can address performance issues and improve system stability.

    []Update Drivers:
    • Ensure that all your drivers, including graphics, chipset, and network drivers, are up to date. Although you mentioned that you downloaded the latest drivers from the HP website, double-check that you have the correct drivers installed.
    [
    ]Check for Background Processes:
    • Run a thorough check for any unnecessary background processes that might be consuming CPU resources. You can use tools like Task Manager to identify resource-hungry applications.
[]Run System File Checker (SFC) Tool:
    • Use the System File Checker tool to scan and repair corrupted system files that could be causing performance issues.
      • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command: sfc /scannow.
    [
    ]Check for Malware:
    • Perform a full system scan using a reputable antivirus software to check for any malware or viruses that could be affecting your system's performance.
    []Performance Monitoring:
    • Monitor your system's performance using built-in tools like Resource Monitor to identify which processes are causing high CPU usage during lockups.
    [
    ]Consider Hardware Issues:
    • While you mentioned that you tested the HDD and RAM and they seem fine, consider any other hardware components that could be causing the problem, such as overheating issues or failing hardware components.
  2. Revert to Vista (Optional):
    • If the performance issues persist and you suspect they are related to Windows 7, consider reverting back to Windows Vista to see if the performance returns to normal. By following these steps, you can diagnose and hopefully resolve the performance issues you are facing with your HP HDX18t laptop after installing Windows 7 Ultimate. If the problem persists, further investigation might be necessary to pinpoint the exact cause of the performance degradation.
