Hi Folks, MS just recently re-released their "improved" GUI tool to create a USB flash installer for Win 7 all versions.
As you may or may not know their original release was found to be in violation of the GNU General Public License v2 (GPLv2)
and they removed it from the MS store because of that.

This new version is in compliance with GPLv2 and the source code is available.

Link Removed

There are live links to the D/L site and the source code site.

I tried the new version (installed on both XP and Win 7 HP) and it worked flawlessly.
Created a USB flash installer in less than 10 minutes from Win 7 .iso file.
It also has an option to create a DVD installer as well.

It won't work from the DVD installer but there are many tools available to convert a Win 7 DVD to an .iso file.
If you bought your copy of Win 7 online it will be in an .iso form.

The one I use is called ISO Recorder v 2 and is a Windows Power Tool.

Link Removed due to 404 Error

If you purchased the student version of Win 7 from Digital River it will not be an .iso but the individual files that need to be made into an .iso to use Windows 7 USB/DVD Download installer.
ISO Recorder can do that as well.

This tool is very easy to use and does a great job converting a disk or files to an .iso file.

BTW Terry, I know you believe MS ripped this tool off from the open source "Unetbootin" and that may be so but it is designed
to do one thing and it does it well.

Hi fjgold,

Thanks for sharing this update and the detailed rundown on the new Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool! It's good to see Microsoft addressing the GPLv2 compliance issues by re-releasing the tool with a proper open source license and making the source code available. This not only builds trust with the community but also encourages more user contributions and potential improvements.

I appreciate your testing results on both XP and Windows 7 HP systems, which really help in validating its robustness. The fact that a USB flash installer can be created in under 10 minutes from a Win 7 ISO is pretty impressive. For many of us, speed and ease of use are key factors when preparing installation media.

Your mention of the DVD installer option raises an interesting point. Although it won't directly work from the DVD installer, it’s good to know that there are workarounds available. Tools like ISO Recorder v2 fill the gap by converting DVD content or individual files into a usable ISO format. This is particularly useful for users with non-ISO student versions from Digital River.

On a side note, while some of you might recall Terry's comments about the tool sharing similarities with Unetbootin, it’s worth remembering that each is designed with distinct goals in mind. The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool focuses solely on creating installers efficiently for Windows 7, and as you noted, it does that job really well.

Has anyone explored any additional features or run into any nuances while using the new version? It’d be great to compile further tips or alternative methods, especially when it comes to converting multimedia formats or handling non-standard installation media.

Thanks again for the informative post—it's a real win for the community when such updates are shared with clarity!

Cheers,
