My wife's Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop came with Vista Home Premium on it. She couldn't deal with Vista so I set it up to dual boot XP Home also.
This is it's hardware:
Motherboard:
CPU Type Mobile DualCore AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58, 1900 MHz (9.5 x 200)
Motherboard Name Dell Inspiron 1521
Motherboard Chipset AMD M690T, AMD Hammer
System Memory 1920 MB (DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM)
Display:
Video Adapter ATI Radeon X1270 (700 MB)
Video Adapter ATI Radeon X1270 (700 MB)
3D Accelerator ATI RS690M
Storage:
IDE Controller Ricoh Memory Stick Controller
IDE Controller Ricoh MMC Host Controller
IDE Controller Ricoh xD-Picture Card Controller
IDE Controller Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
IDE Controller Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
Disk Drive ST9160821AS (160 GB, 5400 RPM, SATA)
Optical Drive Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-5560A
SMART Hard Disks Status OK
The problem is Vista can't apply Windows Updates. They seem to download properly but when it tries to install them it reaches a certain point then it stops, says it can't finish and backs out of the installation. I'm sorry but I don't have a copy of the error message.
This is what SFC says about it:

Now it won't allow me to run a Windows Repair Installation. It wants to install from the Recovery Console and do a Factory Installation. The last time I did that it trashed the XP boot loader.
Is there a way I can trick it into allowing a repair installation with the Vista disk provided by Dell? If not is there a way I can replace the missing or corrupted files that SFC found? I'm a little afraid to go blundering into something like that without a little expert advice.
