Norman’s owner Karen Cobb says he has had a passion for wheels ever since he was a puppy: ‘He began playing with our kid’s scooter in the backyard and we thought it would be fun to give him a ride on it.

‘Then we decided to teach him to push it. Now he loves riding his scooter.’

His skill has turned him into an internet sensation – his Facebook page has more than 500 fans.

And the briard’s popularity has gone into overdrive recently following an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman in the US.

True to form, Norman, who lives in Canton, Georgia, hopped on his scooter and glided across the studio floor to the delight of viewers.

Video footage on YouTube also reveals he is one of the most polite dogs on the planet.

He can close doors after himself and wipe his face with a towel after taking a drink of water from a bowl.

His manners have also earned him dozens of prizes on the show ring circuit.

He won a Companion Dog title at just 15 months old and many more dog obedience rosettes have followed.

Briards were originally bred in France for their herding skills. Other recognised talents include search and rescue and guarding.

They also make excellent companions, finding favour with Napoleon and Thomas Jefferson.

But Norman had better not try his tricks in Brighton – because he will face competition from lakeland terrier Bodhi, who is king of the road on his skateboard.
