Windows 7 ntoskrnl bluescreens

hi

i'm new to the forum, and seeking some assistance that other sources have failed to provide thus far - i'm far from a noob, and a keen overclocker, but only had win 7 up for several months, and this is a relatively recent issue without any new hardware changes, or setting adjustments

apart from the cpu (when the multi kicks up to 9 anyway), the rest of my rig runs at stock speed, although i have recently also overclocked the gpu for gaming, under good cooling and without any issue when playing - the cpu is under a thermalright ultra extreme, and the xfx has a thermalright v2 as demonstrated here

the weird part is that it only seems to have gone bad with embedded video, almost without doubt i can provoke a bluescreen by viewing this page's content, but gaming isn't even an issue

i had troubles in upgrading catalyst (that's hardly unique) and it seemed to be a problem using ati tool or the msi equivalent; oddly now though catalyst control centre seemed well behaved, and i can manually overclock the xfx in gaming to 920/1400 (and 60% manual fan) without problems, i note after the last bsod to gain a minidump and ran your tools that ccc has set the default speeds to 400/900 instead of the previous 157/300 or so :curious: fixed with a reboot

what's that all about ?

anyway, i digress..

i would love your thoughts on the situation

the memory memtests fine (10 runs overnight), the gpu does furmark benching without concerns, and it's too hot here to prime the cpu, but i am not too sure that is issue either - 5 cycles of LinX for a down 'n' dirty trial show zero errors

please, please, please make it go away...

many thx in anticipation of useful input

Hi scruffy1 and Welcome.

STOP 0x000000C1: SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION
Usual causes:
Device driver, ?Memory

Need to sort out your drivers first.

ZoneAlarm Security and Firewall is known to be a cause of BSOD's on many Windows 7 systems. Download the ZoneAlarm Remover Link Removed due to 404 Error. Uninstall ZoneAlarm through Programs and Features. Boot to safe mode and run the ZoneAlarm Remover. Reboot. Make sure that Windows Firewall is enabled.
Alternatively
Try this Microsoft hotfix if you wish to keep ZoneAlarm: Stop Error 0x07F when you run applications that transfer data using the UDP protocol in Win Server 2008 R2/Win 7" which I can neither verify or discount. It may work, it may not.

Let us know how things progress. If (when!) you get further blue screens, attach your new dump files and details and we'll move on from there.

i'll sort out some of this after work tonight

please note that the envy24 driver is a keeper, as it is the work around to use the wolfson dacs on the rear channels on the chaintech av710 to drive my klipsch speakers - has been the same driver since i got the machine, and never failed me afaik

the catalyst update may be a poisoned chalice, if past experience is correct, but i'll try

zonealarm can go

thx for the pointers, i'll let you know

I'm just telling you this so you are aware...
As a rule of thumb, the date for third party drivers to be compatible with Windows 7 is 13 July 2009. Windows 7 is a new operating system. It bears no relation to XP.
Hardware and software designed for XP will not run on Windows 7 unless the Mfr's have updated them to be compatible.
So it might end up bad news. BUT it wasn't mentioned in your dump file...

Yeah, there were a lot of issues with v10.12 but v11.1 is supposed to have addressed those problems. But you are on a good set, I was just letting you know.

Good Choice!!

as in, my drivers are okay ?

catalyst is a p.i.t.a. even though i love the 5770 for the power miser nature and cool running technology of the 40nm process 5 series - but i was an nvidia fanbois for 8 years or so till last year, and their drivers cause far less pain

Good Choice!!

although z.a. didn't go down without a fight : bsod on running the uninstall until i disabled it with msconfig and then killed it in safe mode... twice counting the tool you linked

die bitch! die :right: and it seems to have fixed the embedded problem

it was largely to save me from nasties behind my firewall on the home network (what with a 16y.o. running feral)

guess i will rely on windoze to protect me... :andwhat:

coretemp is fixed; arcsoft i am considering, but as i use vlc i am not sure it does much for me anyhow

my sincere thanks for your assistance; it has been enlightening to have my windoze cleaned :worship:

Everything I've ever learnt was written on the side of a cereal packet!! :D

Yeah, should be fine.

Tenacious bugger aint it!!

Glad to have helped. Any more probs.... You know the routine!!

Glad to have helped. Any more probs.... You know the routine!!

funny you might mention that...

whilst embedded video now plays, it often tells me "adobe player has crashed" and this has occasionally hung firefox briefly, though no bsod ensues

any thoughts on a solution ?

TBH, apart from re-installing Adobe Player, err, no. Not using my PC as a media centre type machine, when Adobe player goes awol on me I never really worry about it. I end up just waiting until the Alternate flash updater tells me there's one available and swap them out.

Suppose I ought to read the other side of the cereal packet. : )

Re: ntoskrnl bluescreens... again !

bummer for me, because i am getting adobe flash player has crashed, and a reinstall (of that and firefox, as some people suggested) resulted in a new bsod experience

can we swear here ? i feel an almost overwhelming urge to cuss bigtime :furious:

will upload the palaver if i must, but bluescreen view tells me it's the old ntoskrnl again, and says :

bsod.jpg

anything this tells me apart from time for a reinstall unless i want to waste a lot of my time

worse still, i have a vista upgrade version for my hardware, but the vendor failed to give me the vista disks (lost by him!) and although i have the win 7 dvd i feel pain is in my future...

kubuntu seems better all the time, if not for my o/c and gaming enthusiasm

Re: ntoskrnl bluescreens... again !

You can do a clean install with Upgrade Media. Courtesy of Link Removed - Invalid URL

Re: ntoskrnl bluescreens... again !

You'll be getting more and more crashes untill you set the RAM right. You got an 800 Mhz RAM currently running 1068Mhz. In your BIOS setup, set DRAM frequency "Auto" or set 800Mhz. Save and reboot.

Re-attach the new screenshots of CPU-Z memory and SPD per each slot - including for those that are empty.

sure

but please note that the ram is team xtreem dark, and rated at 1066 5-5-5-15 despite cpuz's assumptions

also note that it has passed overnight run under memtest without error, and only falls over when using adobe flash in firefox... it can game till the cows come home without issue at the current settings

this has been the case now for close to 2 months since i got the ram, although i confess the e8400 @ 4ghz hasn't been tested on a long run of priming (as it's close to 35c here presently for the next week, that ain't happening anytime soon) only a 20 cycle of LinX, and has been in for the last 6 weeks

the bsod's are a very recent (maybe 2 weeks at the most) phenomenon

i might be under-generous with the vdimm on the ram, but the speeds and latencies are kosher within advertised spec

i find it hard to believe that embedded flash is a harder job for the hardware than hours on medal of honor airborne or ut3, but i accept your thoughts

next time i reboot (likely not tonight unless i am silly enough to watch flash video) i'll tone down the ram and get you the numbers requested (or probably in honesty wind up the vdimm by +0.1v and try my luck again first )

thanks for your input also; my gut feeling is that it's a driver issue not the very benign overclocking settings i have dialled - 2 hz over stock on the ram is not convincingly cavalier

maybe i have been ripped off ?

more to follow, no doubt...

follow up edit :

and as you requested -

though the empty slot shots mystify me as to a reason why

and after i save the changes, i'll try flash... and my money is on another bsod at stock

further editing :

ooh! aah ! i stand corrected :worship: stock is fine

however, in other news, it is equally happy with the vdimm at +0.3v and the speed as before at 1068 with latencies 5-5-5-18  (haven't tried 5-5-5-15)

so i guess the final outcome is don't wimp out of ram voltage appropriate for the speed, especially in hot weather (and it is still over 30c here tonight and nearly midnight)

i should have considered that earlier, but the stability in gaming fooled me

you were right, and get a big thank you for your excellent suggestion

looks like my next step when it cools down here will be to see if i can get 4100 out of the wolfdale because i thought it was the cpu holding me back :iee:

Re: ntoskrnl bluescreens... again !

sure

but please note that the ram is team xtreem dark, and rated at 1066 5-5-5-15 despite cpuz's assumptions

also note that it has passed overnight run under memtest without error, and only falls over when using adobe flash in firefox... it can game till the cows come home without issue at the current settings

Ok, that clears it up. True that CPU-Z is not always correct, but usually it lists XMP and in your case it doesn't. 1066Mhz is your frequency then. Right now you have it 800Mhz as I asked. If it crashes then set it up according to the rated specs. Sometimes manufacturers make a note that the voltage must be set manually, not auto.

this has been the case now for close to 2 months since i got the ram, although i confess the e8400 @ 4ghz hasn't been tested on a long run of priming (as it's close to 35c here presently for the next week, that ain't happening anytime soon) only a 20 cycle of LinX, and has been in for the last 6 weeks

thanks for your input also; my gut feeling is that it's a driver issue not the very benign overclocking settings i have dialled - 2 hz over stock on the ram is not convincingly cavalier

Your gut isn't lying, 2ghz overstock is too much - even if you keep the TDP below 0 the chip will not be stable.

Welcome. Why do I ask for the empty slots? No secret at all, it's been a couple of threads where people would swear they had all sticks the same brand identical and on page 4 it would show they didn't. Some folks occasionally claim they have 1 stick only whereas their CPU-Z shows they have two. Nothing wrong with that, but it's just good to have a clear picture.

Set all the clocks in strict accordance with the manufacturers'. Try out the system for stability for a couple of weeks. Then if it's fine start overclocking again but don't go too high.

Re: ntoskrnl bluescreens... again !

oops, thx

see my late edit - i hadn't noted your new post when i started my diatribe

thx yet again

true, but i said the ram was 2 hertz over stock

although the cpu is (only) 1 ghz over stock (and at less than the vid if i believe cpuz)

however, that's a mere 33% over the rated speed - my opteron 165's quite happily did 50% over their supposed ability, and again this was at around stock volts but under an si120 with good fans (albeit very quietly)

my niche is max overclock at stock volts with good cooling and minimal noise

my current toy looks thus :

update :

cooler weather, less ram speed using a different divider (a mere 890 with +0.2v)

however, still had a few bsod's until it would seem a new update by both windoze and adobe has stabilised the system :star:

would i be correct in thinking my hardware is solid but the drivers involved were flakey ? :nerdie:

seems very well behaved under all the usual stresses including embedded flash and gaming (hawx)

comments ?

I somewhat doubt this. Although anything is possible.

my next step may well be a new install, but i am dreading the experience as i got the system with win 7 on board, and while i can install xp with the mouse tied behind my back (although it is cordless), it would be my first win7 retail install

i played with the rc's

ah well... more procrastination while it's working seems good :ohyea:

4ghz is serious, I would still recommend you default clocks.

pah ! if i wanted to do that i could have stuck with the xeon e3120 at 3.16 stock

it was rock stable at 3.8 for 2 years, but the gigabyte ep35-ds3p is a better board than the ds3 variant that came loaded with win 7

4ghz isn't serious... i am barely at stock vcore (which incidentally i notched up one to 1.232v according to cpuz) - and now the weather is cooler again i'm testing it with orthos blend and it is around 50c at 100% load on low fans
