    Hey,

I have been having some problems with my Windows 7 Professional x64 on an Asus N71Jq (bought 2 months ago or so). (with an Atheros AR9285, Driver 8.0.0.351, Running Symantec Endpoint Protection)
Like a month ago I encountered several random lockups/freezes where my screen freezes. Meaning I can't move the mouse/use keyboard. After that I had to do a hard-reboot.
After searching for a while I did 2 things after which it seemed to have been fixed:
Install new Atheros driver from windows update catalog
    Install hotfix KB2265716

Then last week I had 2 BSOD's concerning athrx.sys (included in zip) after which I did an optional update for Broadcom - Bus controllers and ports - BT-270. Then had another freeze. restored windows till before the update, but unfortunately had another freeze. Decided to reinstall the hotfix, which seemed to work again, until like an hour ago.

All the freezes seem quite random, from watching an internet page to opening the configuration screen, so don't know what to do anymore..

I already ran memtest a months ago with no errors and obviously checked for virusses/malware.

    Hope anyone can help,
    Thanks in advance,
    Seren

    Hey,

I updated the following 3 drivers:
    L1C62x64.sys Fri Sep 04 08:39:09 2009
Atheros L1c PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

    RTKVHD64.sys Thu Dec 03 15:42:57 2009
    RtHDMIVX.sys Wed May 20 13:04:50 2009
    Realtek Audio

    sptd.sys Sun Oct 11 23:55:14 2009
    Daemon/Alcohol/Duplex Secure

As for the others, honestly I don't know where to find the updates, so hope you can help with that. (obviously tried it through device manager, but that didn't help for any of them, even the 3 lsited above)

As for the problems I have with the laptop (freezing and the 2 BSOD's I had)... Do you think that by updating these drivers, that will stop, or are we just attending to the BSOD's now, which to me seemed like the lesser problem? also the freezing allready happened before I had the BSOD's. Do you think they are related or just 2 different problems?

    Thanks in advance,
    Seren

Never update drivers through Windows Update nor the device manager.

100% of the time through manufacturers' websites.

The most important things for you to do right now are:

    1) Visit the manufacturer's site of your wireless adapter. Download/install the latest driver from there.

    2) Uninstall sptd.sys with the installer/uninstaller found here. Do not update with it - rather uninstall - there's a choice:

    DuplexSecure - Downloads

    3) If issues persist, post new crash dumps so we can check em out.

latest driver of wireless adapter is present for as far as I can find.
I'm using sptd for daemon tools (or can I uninstall it and still use daemon tools?)

Problem usually doesn't leave a dump file, since mostly it's not a BSOD, but the freezing. Unfortunately I thought it was fixed a month ago with that hotfix, but it came back, then hadn't had a problem for a week, and then 1 new freeze. No new freezes since my topic here. anyway, will post in this topic next time it happens, but there won't be a dump file.. so not sure if there would be something you can do without that?

Uninstall Daemon Tools and then remove sptd.sys as shown.

Reboot and install PowerISO to use instead. The disc emulation part of the software is free forever.

    Post new crashes if necessary.

There may be an update for it, please check it.

    1. Please uninstall Symntec. It's as old as May 2009:

    teefer2.sys Wed May 13 22:25:52 2009

    2. Try to update these, as best as you can esp. the ASUS one 2007:

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If kernel debugger is available get stack backtrace.
    Arguments:
    Arg1: 0000000000000018, memory referenced
    Arg2: 0000000000000002, IRQL
    Arg3: 0000000000000001, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
Arg4: fffff8800526eac6, address which referenced memory

    Hey,

I updated the wireless driver to 8.0.0.366 (2sept2010), couldn't find any updates last week, but seemed to be one now.

uhm, as for the other drivers to update, I can't seem to find any.. so I'm not sure if I am looking in the wrong way, or that there just aren't any..
anyway, I bought this laptop only a few months ago, so honestly I would think that if they had a more recent asus memory mapping driver, it wouldve been in the factory install, which it was obviously not.

As for symantec, It's a license I have from the university, so I rather keep it. I did download a support tool to check from problems, and it's apparantly not up to date, so I will reinstall it tommorrow and see if that helps... Is there any other reason why I would have to uninstall it (besides the driver date)?

You would want to remove Symantec for a limited amount of time, for as long as you're troubleshooting your crashes. Symantecs that old are quite notorious.

Yeah, but the driver is as old as 2007, not to be used with Windows 7!

    Navigate to C:\Program Files\ATKGFNEX\

    Rename ASMMAP64.sys to ASMMAP64.BAK

    Reboot.

Oke, I did that, is it suppose to get a new version now then?

(so just curious what it is exactly we did by changing the extension)

That makes it unavailable to load into memory with Windows, thus disabling its ability to be an issue.

    Same effect as deleting it.

    No, about the new version.

So then what happens at the time it would be called on and is suppose to load? I just get an error message saying it can't find the file? or something else?

lol, it hasn't crashed yet, but then again, it hadn't crashed for over a week either before this... no freezes so far since uninstalling SPTD/Daemon Tools either, although PowerIso isn't working for me, so might have to put that back on (with an updated SPTD obviously.
Will post again if it crashed again (freeze or BSOD)
might be a while though :p guess that's the problem when it looks so random.
