Reading files and folders from a W7 HDD

Hi,
I have a HDD from my now ex-W7 pc which has a whole lot of files and images I need to lift.
I have hooked the drive (sata) to my XP pc and tried to access them, but - unsurprisingly - they are not accessible straight off...
What steps do I need to take to be able to read and recover these files to my XP machine?

What do you mean by "not accessible". Can you see the drive? Can you see the contents of the drive?
