Windows 7 Reinstall WMP?

Could someone please help me to sort out problems with windows media player.12/wmv9 (?uninstal/reinstal) on my brand new computer.

The colours are garish, contrast is over-the-top and obviously wrong. This happens with
*any program playing wmv files
*any video file (wmv, avi, mpg) played by wmp.
(enclosed frame from avi file played by 1.wmp 2.virtualdub)

It does not happen with realplayer or virtualdub with any non-wmv video file - colours/contrast are normal.

I have tried disabling and reenabling wmp, and also the microsoft "fixit" thingy. I'm sure if I could reinstall wmp or wmv9 it would sort it out, but I don't want to have to hack registers on a brand new computer.

Grateful for any advice

best wishes
Stephen

Thanks for reply and welcome.

I haven't loaded any video players apart from real, nor any codec kits. Where should I look for these codecs?
Thanks for the link, but what it suggests is equivalent to "fixit" and disabling/re-enabling wmp which I have already done.

And "Fix wmp" from thewindowsclub didn't.

It must be possible to remove and reinstall wmv9!!! I can't even find it on the internet.
