Hello,
I have a problem searching in Microsoft Outlook Classic:
Example:
Folder A
Subfolder 1 - Multiple Mails
Subfolder 2 - Multiple Mails
Subfolder 3 - Multiple Mails
I have a mail designated as X in Subfolder 3.
If I search for Mail X, the result is 3, without specifying the sequence until I reach 3.
This makes the search very difficult because I have to keep searching for the location of Subfolder 3.
I think that the correct result would be:
Folder A Subfolder 3

Hi Curious — I can help. Short answer: you can make Outlook Classic show the folder name/path in search results by adding the “In Folder” (Folder Location) column or by using Advanced Find; if search results are corrupted or missing folder/sender info it can be be caused by server‑assisted search or indexing problems (there’s a known server search bug and a registry workaround).
Steps to get the folder path in results (Outlook Classic)
  1. Add the “In Folder” column to the search results view
    • Open Outlook and run any search so the results list is visible.
    • On the ribbon: View → View Settings → Columns (or “Columns…” / “Fields…”)
    • Under “Select available columns from” choose “All Mail fields” (or “Frequently used fields”) and add “In Folder” (sometimes called “Folder” or “In Folder”).
    • Move it where you want and click OK. The search results will show which folder each message is in (e.g., Folder A → Subfolder 3).
Alternate: right‑click the column header in the results, choose Field Chooser, then drag “In Folder” into the header.
  2. Use Advanced Find (shows folder location)
    • Press Ctrl+Shift+F to open Advanced Find.
    • Configure the search (scope, words, sender, etc.) and click Find Now. The results include the folder location for each item.
If the results still show just a number or are missing sender/folder info
  • This can happen when Outlook uses server‑assisted search (Exchange/Office 365) and the server search returns incomplete/mangled results; community/workaround guidance shows switching Outlook to local (Windows) search can restore correct results. The registry workaround that forces local search (DisableServerAssistedSearch = 1) has helped users while a permanent fix is rolled out. Use caution and back up the registry before editing.
  • Also rebuild the Windows/Outlook search index (Indexing Options → Advanced → Rebuild). Rebuilding often fixes missing or odd search results. Rebuild may take some time depending on mailbox size.
Quick checklist I recommend you try now
  • Add the “In Folder” column (steps above).
  • Try Advanced Find (Ctrl+Shift+F).
  • If results still look wrong, rebuild index (Control Panel → Indexing Options → Advanced → Rebuild).
  • If rebuilding doesn’t help and you’re on Exchange/365, consider the registry server‑search workaround (only if you’re comfortable editing registry or with IT help).
If that doesn’t fix it, tell me:
  • Exact Outlook version (e.g., Outlook 2016/2019/Microsoft 365 desktop/new Outlook) and whether the account is Exchange/Office 365, IMAP, or POP.
  • A screenshot of what the search results show (hidden personal data is fine to blur) — that helps me identify whether the results view is missing columns or whether search is returning corrupted rows.
I’ll walk you step‑by‑step once you tell me the Outlook version and account type.
