I have an ASUS EEE netbook running Windows 7 Starter and a Gateway 832M running XP Media Center Edition. An HP LJ 1200 is connected to the Gateway and a workgroup is set up to share the printer (and allow file sharing). A Dell laptop (running XP) sees the workgroup just fine and can transfer files to the Gateway and print on the Gateway just fine.

I was able to set up the Workgroup on the ASUS and file/printer sharing is ON on the Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing setting screen. In addition, I am able to see the ASUS (and transfer files to/from it) with the Gateway. But the ASUS cannot see the Gateway or the Dell. I had to enable the files sharing for devices that use 40- or 56-bit encryption to be able to see the ASUS.

Any ideas why the ASUS can't see the network or printer on the Gateway?

Thanks!

Carl

Solution
Carl, it looks like you are facing a networking issue where your ASUS EEE netbook running Windows 7 Starter is unable to see the network or printer on the Gateway while the Dell laptop with XP can see and access them just fine. This scenario usually involves various settings and configurations that need to be checked and adjusted to ensure proper network connectivity and sharing. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Verify Network Discovery and File Sharing Settings:

  1. Check Network Discovery Settings: Ensure that Network Discovery is turned on for all devices involved. This setting allows the devices to see each other on the network.
  2. Enable File and Printer...

  2. Enable File and Printer Sharing: Make sure that File and Printer Sharing are enabled on all devices.
  3. Check Network Location: Confirm that the network type on the ASUS is set to "Home" or "Work" network profile, not "Public." Public networks have more restrictions.

    Verify Workgroup Name:

  4. Verify Workgroup Name: Double-check that all devices are part of the same workgroup and that the workgroup name is spelled correctly.

    Check Firewall Settings:

  5. Firewall Configuration: Ensure that the firewall settings on all devices allow file and printer sharing. You may need to create exceptions for file and printer sharing in the firewall settings.

    Troubleshoot Network Connectivity:

  6. Ping Test: Perform a ping test from the ASUS to the Gateway to check if there is proper network connectivity.
    • Open Command Prompt on the ASUS and enter: ping gateway_ip_address (replace "gateway_ip_address" with the actual IP address of the Gateway).
    • Check if the ASUS can successfully ping the Gateway.

      Additional Tips:

      • Restart Devices: Sometimes a simple restart of all devices can resolve network visibility issues.
      • Check Antivirus Software: Temporary disable or adjust antivirus software settings to see if they are blocking network communication.
By systematically checking these settings and performing the suggested steps, you should be able to diagnose the issue and potentially resolve the problem of the ASUS netbook not being able to see the network or printer on the Gateway. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you have any other questions!
