WordPad now seems to look like Microsoft Office. I do not have Microsoft Office nor ever intend to. WordPad seems to do pretty much everything I need - except:

It doesn't seem to have a way of putting tables into a document.

The rtf format allows for tables. It can read documents with tables - even complex tables with row and column spans and alignment, in rtf format.

If there was a replacement that was exactly like WordPad and did not contain any features beyond what WordPad had other than table support, please let me know.

If you are looking for a WordPad-like program that supports inserting tables into documents without the additional features of Microsoft Office, you can consider using a lightweight text editor or a simple word processing tool. Here are a few recommendations:

Jarte is a free word processor based on the Microsoft WordPad engine, but with added features such as table support. It retains the simplified interface of WordPad while providing more functionality like creating and editing tables.

FocusWriter

While FocusWriter is primarily a distraction-free writing tool, it does support basic formatting features including table creation. It provides a clean interface for a focused writing experience.

TextMaker Free

TextMaker Free is part of the SoftMaker FreeOffice suite, which offers a free version of their word processor with table support and other basic functions. It may have more features than WordPad, but still maintains a simple interface. These alternatives should provide the table functionality you are looking for without overwhelming you with extra features beyond basic word processing capabilities. You can choose the one that suits your needs best.
