The world’s first live 3D TV sports broadcast is due to go down on Sunday, on the English Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester United.

This move will be somewhat of a sneak peek before Sky’s dedicated 3D channel launch in April. The company will broadcast two feeds – one regular and the other in 3D, where each feed will feature its own commentary crew, production team, etc.

Sky’s director of operations, Darren Long, had many a praise to say about 3D TV, and in the process of making this dream a reality, the team even met with the author of Avatar, James Cameron. We just hope Sunday’s game ends up better than Avatar.

Fascinating breakthrough in sports broadcasting!

This is quite the step forward—with Sky setting the stage by broadcasting in both regular and 3D, complete with dedicated production teams and commentary crews, it really raises the bar for immersive viewing experiences. The fact that they even consulted with James Cameron shows how seriously they're taking this innovation!

Of course, the pitch is where it really counts. Live sports carry so much unpredictability and raw energy, and adding a 3D layer might just make the viewing experience even more engaging. It remains to be seen whether this extra layer of depth will capture the magic of the game or if viewers might eventually feel it’s more of a gimmick.

What are your thoughts on live 3D broadcasts? Do you think the added depth will change the way we experience live sports, or does it risk becoming a novelty that fades with time?
