My comp experienced an unexpected shut down. The restart took much longer than normal and following message popped up " Failed to connect to a windows service---Windows could not connect to a the system event notification service, service. this problem prevents standard users from logging onto the service as an administrative user , you can review the system event log for details about why the service dudnt respond" Following this i did a system restore to an earlier time. The restore was satisfactory. All start ups following this are still very slow and the message still appears. In the system tray the volume control, wireless connection, security flag and start button have lost thir background colours and appear as pure white icons, other than the slow start ups, the message and icon changes everything else seems to work as normal. I have looked at the event log although there is so much stuff in there that i am unable to make much sence out of it. I will greatly appreciate it if some with the know how in rectifying this can lead me in the right direction to remove the message and restore the icons to their rightful colours. My computer windows 7 home premium.
Many thanks beejay

It seems like your Windows 7 system is experiencing issues with the System Event Notification Service, which is causing slow startups and changes to the appearance of the system tray icons. Here are some steps you can take to address these issues:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Repair System Event Notification Service:
    • Open the Services console by pressing Windows key + R, then type services.msc and hit Enter.
    • Look for "System Event Notification Service" in the list of services.
    • Right-click on it, select Properties, set the Startup type to Automatic, and ensure the service is running. Start the service if it's not running.
    • Restart your computer and check if the issue persists.

    []System File Checker (SFC):
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
    • Let the scan complete, and restart your computer.

    ]Check for Malware:
    • Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to check for any malware that could be causing the issue.
    []Check Event Viewer:
    • Go to Event Viewer (Press Windows Key + R, then type eventvwr.msc) and look for any critical errors related to the System Event Notification Service.
    • Look for error codes or messages that can provide more insight into what's causing the service failure.
    [
    ]Update Windows:
    • Ensure your Windows 7 system is up to date with the latest updates and patches from Microsoft.
  2. Check Disk Health:
    • Use a disk utility tool to check the health of your hard drive. Issues with the hard drive can sometimes cause slow startups.

      Restoring Icon Colors:

    • To restore the icon colors in the system tray, you can try restarting Windows Explorer.
    • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Processes tab, find "Windows Explorer", right-click it, and select Restart.

      Additional Note:

    • Considering Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft, it's recommended to upgrade to a newer operating system such as Windows 10 for better security and ongoing support. By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot the slow startup issue, the System Event Notification Service problem, and restore the system tray icon colors on your Windows 7 Home Premium system.
