Windows 7 vista 32 bit to windows 7 64 bit

I have a dell processor running at 2.18GHz with 4 GB of ram. When I got it I just used a 32 bit version of Vista. I am now ready to install Windows 7 and was wondering if there would be a probem of installing a 64 bit version of Windows 7 over my 32 bit version of Vista. One thing that I thought might be a problem is that my system disk is FAT 32. I don't want to change this since I would like to do an upgrade rather than a clean install and keep all my current applications working without having to reinstall them. Is this possible?

As far as I understand you can not upgrade a 32bit os to a 64bit os. Only a fresh install.
