Vista is just...freezing

I'm here with my friend who just got a Sony Vaio Laptop, Intel Centrino Duo.
    It came with Vista installed.
It's worked just fine up until now. Last night while loading images it completely froze. We had no choice but to do a force shut down.
Now when we start it up it gives 4 options: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt and Start Windows Normally.

When we start it normally, nothing loads and after about 30 seconds the background fades a bit. The timer is always in place of the arrow.

On safe mode, we can't connect to the internet.

Any idea how to fix this? (Keep in mind, crazy technical stuff will go over our heads)

    Thank you.

go to programs, accessories, system tools
    drill down to system restore.
run that utility, go back a few days before the problem
    your data will be safe
