Windows Vista Vista Locks

We have an HP Pavilion with Windows Vista. All was well in the first few months however the computer now locks up moments after boot up has completed. It runs in safe mode. We are usung an LG Flatron monitor. Printer, speakers and scanner have been disconnected.
