We have at least three sources who believe that there is evidence of recriticality at Fukushima. What's troubling is that it is uncontrolled criticality. For those who don't know, this means the fission process is starting and stopping at random. Blue flashes of light have been witnessed at Fukushima. This blue light if produced by electrons through a dielectric is called Cherenkov radiation. It's a normal process within the reactor. When the blue flashes are seen outside the reactor, those are produced by neutrons and radioactive isotopes are given off.
The way that scientists know that this is going on is based upon evidence, not conjecture. Arnie Gunderson of Fairewinds Associates has mentioned that Chlorine-38 which has a half life of 38 minutes has been detected at Fukushima. It is not a natural byproduct of a normal nuclear fission reaction. Another source that mentions Chlorine-38 isF. Dalnoki-Veress who offers a detail analysis of the isotopes produced at Fukushima. Finally today Professor Akira Hiroshi Koide offered his paper on the radioactive release and noted the amounts of Iodine-131 are not correct based upon a half-life of 8 days. They should be much lower if the reaction had taken place and stopped. Instead they are increasing despite them being manually shutdown. In essence, we have no clear explanation or accounting of all of the radiation being produced. In some cases, the amounts of radiation released have been fabricated or censored by TEPCO and the Japanese government.
The Kyodo Japanese News agency noted recently that nuclear fuel rods were discovered and buried by bulldozer in order to protect workers. One doesn't simply bury the rods since they will continue to react. They must be carefully cooled through an extensive process for many months. The rods were possibly tossed through the several explosions that took place post-tsunami and were witnessed by millions. No one has offered a detailed accounting of all the rods, so we don't know exactly how many were tossed in the explosions. As of earlier today, #1-3 were so radioactive that workers couldn't enter them. The Japanese used the word "immeasurable" amounts of radiation. This should alarm everyone since 1 Sievert is now apparently the norm for workers, which is a massive dose. One assumes that the amounts produced are quite a bit higher.
We do know that there are an estimated 4400 tons of active and spent fuel rods at Fukushima based upon an earlier presentation by the IAEA. I have seen many different estimates in the US and Japanese media, but that is the closest we have to an accurate accounting. This is an enormous amount, and we need to know precisely where each fuel rod is located, and also know how many are unaccounted for. Spent is a misnomer. They are just as dangerous as spent rods.
Up until 24 hours ago, #5 and #6 were considered to be stable, however for those who saw the recent announcement from TEPCO where he cries about the 10,000 gallons being released, it was also announced that the amounts of radioactive water building up was causing issues with leaking at those reactors. We might see problems with all six reactors at Fukushima now.
The situation appears radically unstable despite the dearth of news coverage both in Japan and in the USA.

That is more then a little scary !
