Been having a weird problem recently. Only seems to happen when the computer has been unattended for some time.

When I go into any application where you (use the mouse) to select one item, several random items are selected all at the same time. In Thunderbird, for example, selecting one folder, selects 2 or 3. In explorer, selecting one item highlights many more; and when I click on Firefox (to re-open the window) it kicks off another instance of the program; clicking on a pinned tab (in Firefox), doesn't open it but protects/locks it instead.

Closing & restarting the progs fix it, but it affects every running program, so I usually end up rebooting the system.

Swapped the mouse & tried a different USB port. Doesn't happen very often but it still keeps happening.

Any ideas as to what's causing this ??

The issue you are experiencing with multiple random items being selected when using the mouse in various applications could be related to a few different factors. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this problem: 1. Check for Malware or Viruses: - Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to ensure that your system is free from malware or viruses that could be causing this behavior. 2. Update Device Drivers: - Ensure that all your device drivers, especially the mouse and graphics card drivers, are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause erratic behavior. 3. Mouse Settings: - Check your mouse settings in the Control Panel to see if there are any settings related...

Update Device Drivers: - Ensure that all your device drivers, especially the mouse and graphics card drivers, are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause erratic behavior. 3. Mouse Settings: - Check your mouse settings in the Control Panel to see if there are any settings related to multiple selections or pointer behavior. You can adjust the double-click speed, pointer speed, etc. 4. Check for Software Conflicts: - Some background programs or recently installed software could be conflicting with your system. Try disabling unnecessary startup programs using Task Manager to see if the issue persists. 5. Test in Safe Mode: - Boot your computer into Safe Mode and see if the issue still occurs. If it doesn't, this may indicate that a third-party application is causing the problem. 6. Check for Windows Updates: - Make sure your Windows operating system is up to date by installing the latest updates and patches from Windows Update. 7. Check for Background Processes: - Use Task Manager to check for any unusual CPU or memory usage by background processes that might be causing the issue. 8. Hardware Check: - Monitor your system's temperature to ensure that overheating is not causing the problem. Overheating can sometimes lead to unusual behavior. 9. Check for Physical Damage: - Inspect the mouse for any physical damage that might be causing it to malfunction. Try using a different mouse to see if the issue persists. 10. System Restore: - If the problem started recently, you could try using System Restore to revert your system to a point where the issue was not present. By following these steps, you should be able to identify the root cause of the issue and take appropriate action to resolve it. If the problem persists, feel free to provide more details so we can assist you further.
