Hi. I have a French-language laptop running Windows 11, version 23H2, but have been unable to get version 24. My laptop is 3 years old, upgraded from Win10 when it became available. Here are the specifications as copied from Speccy:

Windows 11 Famille 64-bit
CPU:
Intel Core i5 10300H @ 2.50GHz 51 °C
Comet Lake 14nm Technology

RAM: 16,0 Go Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1462MHz (21-21-21-47)

Motherboard: HP 8741 (U3E1)

Graphics:
Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@144Hz)
ARZOPA (1920x1080@60Hz)
Intel UHD Graphics (HP)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with Max-Q Design (HP) 50 °C
SLI Disabled

Storage:
931GB Western Digital WDC WD10SPSX-60A6WT0 (SATA (SSD)) 35 °C
238GB KXG60ZNV256G KIOXIA (Unknown (SSD))

Can anyone explain why I can't get version 24 please? Thank you in advance.
Jill

Solution
Hi Jill,

Upgrading to Windows 11, version 24 can sometimes be a tricky affair, and there are various factors that could be causing the issue you're experiencing. Let’s break down some potential reasons based on your specifications:

1. System Requirements: Your hardware appears to meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11, including the CPU (Intel Core i5 10300H), sufficient RAM (16 GB), and supported graphics. However, ensure that your motherboard has the latest BIOS updates, which can sometimes help with compatibility during upgrades.

2. Windows 11 Compatibility: Check if your specific model, the HP 8741, is fully compatible with the latest Windows 11 version. Sometimes manufacturers provide lists of compatible...

Sometimes manufacturers provide lists of compatible devices or even driver updates that can affect the upgrade process.

3. Update Settings: Make sure that your Windows Update settings are set to 'automatic' and not limited to installing updates manually. You can check this in the Settings app under Update & Security > Windows Update.

4. Language Settings: Since you mentioned that your laptop is running a French-language version of Windows, ensure that the language settings are correct and that the update package for version 24 supports your language.

5. Pending Updates: Sometimes previous Windows updates need to be installed before you can upgrade to a new version. Check for any pending updates and install them first.

6. Storage Space: Ensure that you have enough additional storage space for the new version. While you have significant storage capacity, if the drive is nearly full, it might prevent the update from being applied.

7. Error Messages: If you see specific error messages while attempting to update, those messages can provide additional insights. If possible, note down any error codes you encounter.

8. Manual Update: If all else fails, you can consider downloading the Windows 11 installation media directly from Microsoft's website and performing an in-place upgrade.

If you've checked all these areas and are still having trouble, you might want to visit the official HP support website for specific guidance relating to your laptop model.

I hope this helps you diagnose the issue! Feel free to ask more questions if you need additional assistance.

Solution
Hi,

Is it because you aren't seeing it in Windows Update? If thats the case, you can upgrade to it using Download Windows 11

Thank you both for your quick replies! I will check all the things you've suggested and get back to you.

Hi again. I've tried all of your suggestions, except for doing an in-place installation. The HP site tells me that there is a BIOS update available for my laptop, but it fails to download using the HP tool, for an unknown reason. I am, though, able to download it to my desktop. I hesitate to execute it simply because HP recommends temporarily disabling Bitlocker so as not to be locked out of the computer upon reboot. I haven't been able to find the Bitlocker manager, unfortunately, in spite of lengthy searching. I'm beginning to think that I can't update the BIOS and therefore can't get the latest version of Windows. Thank you again for your suggestions.

Open Start: Click on the Start menu or press the Windows key.

Access Control Panel: Type "Control Panel" and press Enter to open it.

Find BitLocker Drive Encryption: In the Control Panel, navigate to System and Security and then click on BitLocker Drive Encryption.

Suspend BitLocker Protection

I'm afraid that Bitlocker doesn't appear in my Control Panel/System and Security. Perhaps because I'm using the Family edition of Windows?

If you are on the Home Edition of Windows, you do not have to worry about BitLocker as it is not available in this version.

That's good news! Thank you - I should have mentioned that earlier!

So I updated the BIOS, but after checking for Windows 11 updates, I'm still on version 23H2. I guess my laptop isn't eligible for 24 in spite of what HP says. Thank you for all your help!

24H2 is still bugging and not working for many devices which is why you have not received as an upgrade through Windows updates. Once the vendors and Microsoft work on the issues it will become available. An in-place upgrade will likely fail.

You might not have Windows 11 version 24H2 yet because Microsoft releases updates gradually, and the French version could be delayed. Also, make sure your settings allow immediate updates (check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options). Lastly, keep at least 20 GB free on your C: drive. you can also try installing it manually using the Windows Update Assistant from Microsoft’s website.

Thank you. I'll wait and see if it comes automatically (I do have immediate updates turned on) for the time being.

Great suggestion, Mike! If the user isn’t seeing the option to upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2 in Windows Update, using the Windows 11 Download page is a reliable alternative.
Here’s a quick breakdown for anyone unfamiliar with the process:

Steps to Upgrade via the Download Page:

  1. Access the Windows 11 Installation Assistant:
  2. Create Installation Media:
    • Use the Create Windows 11 Installation Media tool if you prefer to upgrade via bootable media (USB/DVD).
    • This is handy for incompatible systems where bypassing checks might be a factor.
  3. Download ISO File:
    • Select Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for a clean installation or manual upgrade.

Things to Check Before Upgrading:

  • System Requirements:
    • Ensure the device meets TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and CPU compatibility requirements.
    • If bypassing these checks, be aware the installation will be unsupported by Microsoft.
  • Windows Update Setting:
    • Sometimes updates are deprioritized for staged rollouts. Check Advanced Options > Optional Updates.
  • Backup Your Data:
    • Always back up important files before upgrading, just in case.

Let me know if additional clarification or tips are needed for latest-version upgrades! 😊
