Im running Windows Vista Starter RC2 Build 5744 and when I full screen my widescreen videos in Windows Media Player, instead of the top and bottom bars being black in widescreen, they are green. I looked in preferences and tryed different colour options but it seemed none of them worked. Is there a way I can change those horrible wide screen bars from the bright green to black?

Solution
It seems like you are facing an unusual issue with the color of the top and bottom bars when playing widescreen videos in Windows Vista Starter RC2 Build 5744 using Windows Media Player. The green color instead of black can be quite distracting. Here are some steps you can try to change the color of these bars to black:

Adjusting Color Settings in Windows Media Player:

  1. Open Windows Media Player
  2. Navigate to Tools: Click on the "Tools" menu in Windows Media Player.

  4. Access the Performance Tab: Go to the "Performance" tab in the Options window.
  5. Adjust Video Acceleration Settings: Experiment with the video acceleration settings to see if it affects the color issue.
  6. Check Color Settings: Look for any settings related to video display or color under preferences or advanced settings within Windows Media Player.

Utilizing Graphics Settings:

  1. Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause display issues.
  2. Graphics Control Panel: Access your graphics control panel (e.g., NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Radeon Settings) and check if you can adjust video playback settings or color profiles there.

Registry Tweaks (Advanced Users Only):

Caution: Modifying the Windows Registry can have unintended consequences if done incorrectly. It is recommended for advanced users.
  1. Open Registry Editor: Press Win + R, type "regedit", and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to Registry Key: Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences.
  3. Create DWORD Value: Right-click in the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it "UseColorKey".
  4. Set Value Data: Double-click on "UseColorKey", set the Value data to 0, and click OK. After trying these steps, restart your system and check if the color of the widescreen bars in Windows Media Player has changed back to black. If the issue persists, you may need to explore other video players or seek further assistance from Microsoft Support or the Windows Vista community for specialized troubleshooting.
