You can disable this function without having to download anything.
Go to "Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features" and in the left Navigation pane, click on "Turn Windows features on or off", scroll down to "Windows Gadget Platform" and uncheck the box, click "OK" and Restart your PC when asked.
