When you say 'won't display', do you mean that the screen just stays blank when you boot or do you see the boot screens and then no desktop?

I mean when i right click on an image and choose "set as desktop background" it wont do anything. so all i get is a blue background with no desktop image.

everything else loads like it should (ie. aero, icons so on and so forth)*

Just in case, I once got a black backgound and had to go back to the original Windows logo and after that it was OK. Maybe the will work for your also. A wild guess, as you probalby realize...:)
