Zilliz, the company behind the open-source vector database Milvus, has announced the launch of a new Zilliz Cloud region in Azure Central India, marking a significant expansion of its global infrastructure. This strategic move aims to empower businesses in India and neighboring regions to develop and scale AI applications while ensuring data sovereignty, regulatory compliance, low-latency performance, and cost efficiency.
The increasing importance of data residency has made it imperative for companies operating in India to have greater control over their data storage and processing locations. By establishing a presence in Azure's Central India region, located in Pune, Zilliz Cloud offers developers the ability to keep their data within national borders, thereby simplifying compliance with local regulations without compromising on performance or budget.
Charles Xie, CEO of Zilliz, emphasized the benefits of this expansion:
"By adding a new region in India, we're helping customers reduce cross-border data transfer costs and latency, while also simplifying compliance with local regulations. It's a win-win for both innovation and infrastructure spend." (prnewswire.com)
With this addition, Zilliz Cloud now operates across 26 cloud regions globally, making it one of the most geographically distributed vector database platforms available. The Central India region joins other key deployments across AWS, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. This extensive network enables organizations to optimize for latency, locality, and cost while scaling to support billions of vector embeddings and demanding Generative AI (GenAI) workloads.

Companies like Sarvam, an AI startup building multilingual models in India, exemplify the performance requirements driving this expansion. Dr. Pratyush Kumar, Co-Founder of Sarvam, stated:
The Azure Central India region is now live and available to all Zilliz Cloud customers. Organizations can immediately begin deploying clusters in the new region through the Zilliz Cloud console. This expansion underscores Zilliz's commitment to providing robust, scalable, and compliant AI infrastructure solutions to a global customer base.
