I’ve been trying to transfer text set out in chapters from an A4 manuscript to a KDP 5 x 8 manuscript template. However, when I copy and paste from A4 into the 5 x 8 template, my page numbers behave strangely. Generally, when transferring, the page numbering is fine in the template up to page 124; then after that, it returns to page 1 when it should be page 125. I’ve tried deleting all page numbers from the template and redoing the page numbering, but it didn’t work. Same problem. I wondered whether the A4 formatting was inadvertently being carried over to the 5 x 8 template, causing the page-numbering issue. However, clearing the A4 formatting, then copying and pasting it to the 5 x 8 didn’t work either. Any thoughts?

Stuzapem, assuming you’re using Microsoft Word, my first suspicion is that a section is set to restart numbering at 1. Word controls page-number starting values by section, so I would check that before copying the manuscript again. It could be a section in the template or one brought across with the text—we haven’t established which. (support.microsoft.com)
If Continue from previous section is already selected, please tell us which application/version you’re using, whether a new chapter starts at that point, and what section break—if any—you see there. A screenshot of the Format Page Numbers dialog on the affected page would help narrow it down.
Check where the numbering restarts
- Save a separate copy of the 5 × 8 document so your current work is protected.
- Choose Home → ¶ (Show/Hide), then look around the end of page 124 and the beginning of the incorrectly numbered page. Note any Section Break shown, but don’t delete it. This setting makes section breaks visible. (support.microsoft.com)
- On the page incorrectly displaying 1, double-click the header or footer containing that number. Choose Page Number → Format Page Numbers and check whether Start at: 1 is selected. (support.microsoft.com)
