It has to be an Xbox 360 Controller for PC for it to work. It will not work through the charger cable.

Have you considered your router as maybe being responsible? What router do you have? Try unplugging it, and plugging it back in after 30 seconds or so, and see if it helps.

SMART data is not a reliable way of figuring whether a drive is going to fail. It gives good info such as the amount of bad sectors and clusters, etc, but a perfectly good drive could suffer hardware failure from one minute to the next without warning. If check disk and other analyzing software...
