Ahci
I will drop this discussion after this post.
As far as I can tell, AHCI allows NCQ (Native Command Queing) and hot swap. That's all!
I found this post on another forum and it backs up the bulletin from OCZ. ie. it's of no use for SSD.
Ssd & ahci
My SSD is also a Vertex 60 with the latest firmware. Sluggish behavior was one of the symptoms I observed using AHCI.
Now that I have reverted to IDE Mode, the SSD is instantly responsive. The slightly higher (+0.2) performance index using AHCI is a false indicator of real...
According to a bulletin on the OCZ site;
With AHCI on; my drive score went from 7.1 to 7.3, but my computer became unusable from the same symptoms quoted in the bulletin.
As for my overall WPI score; it is limited to 4.4 because of the over emphasis on Aero Performance. I have not invested...
I installed an OCZ "Vertex" 60GB SSD as my C: Drive with a magnetic drive for files and backup.
I now get to the Sign-on screen in 20sec. And everything launches super-quick. I like it!
Only one glitch: The SSD did not like AHCI mode at all and locked-up repeatedly. I reconfigured the BIOS back...
When I attempt to delete certain files or folders I am denied permission and prompted: "requires administrators permission".
But I am the Administrator! And I am signed in as such.
How do I fix this problem?
Richard

Tweeks
Using Windows 7 Manager, I did those recommended tweeks - L2 cache size, Start and Shut-down settings etc.
Now my machine shuts-down in 17 seconds. Power-On to Login is 35 seconds.:)
Thanks to all for the great tips,
Richard
Progress Report
I have done all the things suggested in this thread, and every little thing has added up to a measurable improvement.
I have to say, though, that Windows 7 Manager has transformed my machine. And I am seeing a little bit of improvement each time I re-start. I was astonished at...
Boot time
I have cleaned up my start and services folders in msconfig, and changed the pre-fetch setting.
I am now down to <40sec start-up.
I'll try the clean-up apps posted and see if there is anything else I might do.
Thanks for the ideas!
Rick
Takes too long
I don't know? Maybe I need better/faster HDD's; although I already have W.D. SATA 300 drives.
Actually, even with Vista, my startup was never better than 45sec. But shut-down was much faster than the 1min I now get.

I'll try a new clean install (when I'm more in the...
When I "sleep" my machine in S-3 mode; upon waking, WDM quits and reverts to Basic mode, losing my prefered window color setting. Only a full re-start wil fix it!
When I set the BIOS to use S-1 suspend type, sleep/wake-up does not cause the problem - my window color setting is retained - however...

I would like to know what others are experiencing with shut-down time.
My machine was getting slower and slower (5 min. or more) until I did a Defrag
using the embeded application instead of using Power-Defrag which had worked
for me in the past, but not lately...
Why?
I have used Firefox at work (back when I had a job) and found it to be a pain in the butt when I wanted to print a page. I was constantly running back to the computer to re-format for a proper and economical print job.
The only instance where FireFox, with all the add-ons was of use to me...
Why do I use IE ?
I have tried Opera: I didn't like it!
I have tried Firefox: I didn't like it!
I tried Google Chrome: I didn't like it!
(1) I like IE.
(2) Part of this Windows 7 Beta/RC process
is to iron-out the wrinkles in the product. And
IE is part of that.
