What was reported
Pure Xbox says a 60FPS mode was "very quietly pushed out" to Series S in recent days. The outlet says the patch notes for last week's free DLC update mentioned it, but they wrongly credited the Series X version with the 60FPS addition. Pure Xbox's theory is that this mix-up kept anyone from noticing.
Note the sourcing here:
- The performance observations come from raw footage by the YouTube channel Fuzion Xbox Testing, as viewed by Pure Xbox. IO Interactive has not published a technical breakdown.
- The official Update 1.3.0 notes (Extended Operations, released October 1, 2026) don't say anything about a Series S 60fps mode. They do list an Xbox Series download of 13.5 GB.
- So the link between the update and the new mode rests on Pure Xbox's account. The public notes don't confirm it.
How it runs, according to the footage
Pure Xbox's verdict is "relatively well, but certainly with some visual drawbacks."
- Visuals: The graphical settings look "pretty low" in Performance mode.
- Frame rate: It seems to hover around 50–60FPS for most of the footage. That is not a locked 60.
- Display advice: Pure Xbox suggests a VRR-capable display. VRR (variable refresh rate) lets the screen follow the console's output, which softens the effect of an uneven frame rate. The outlet doesn't say VRR is required.
The report gives no resolution figures, settings breakdown, frame-time graph or post-update Quality mode numbers. Treat "50–60FPS" as an eyeball estimate, not a guarantee.
Why this is a notable change
Before launch, IO Interactive was fairly clear that Series S would stay at 30fps. The comparison below uses figures from Pure Xbox's May 2026 coverage of Digital Foundry's technical deep dive and of Fuzion's launch footage.
| Console | Launch modes (as reported) |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Quality at 30FPS and Performance at 60FPS, with occasional dips into the mid-50s in busy sequences |
| Xbox Series S | One mode at 1080p and 30FPS, with occasional drops to around 28–29FPS |
Digital Foundry reported that lead render engineer Alex Mueller attributed the Series S limit to a "scalability-first" philosophy. Rather than strip out systems like lighting and volumetrics to reach 60fps within the console's RAM and GPU limits, IO chose to keep visual parity at 30fps. Wccftech's coverage added that IO described the 30fps limit as applying "at launch," so a later patch was always possible.
That context makes the new mode easy to read. Series S still can't hold 60fps with the full visual stack, but the trade-off is now the player's choice. The footage suggests the cost is lower-looking graphics and a frame rate that wobbles. (That reading is my inference, not something IO has stated.)
What's confirmed in Update 1.3.0
The official notes confirm several Series S visual fixes, though none of them amounts to documentation of the new mode:
- Character LOD (level of detail) and skinning issues.
- Some character models appearing too dark in Performance Mode on Series S.
- Lighting smearing.
- NPCs spawning in mid-air or appearing late.
The notes also list New Game+, Photo Mode, a "00" difficulty, new TacSim content and more than 700 fixes. A "too dark in Performance Mode on Series S" fix is interesting, since the notes imply that mode exists in some form. Even so, Pure Xbox's account remains the only source for when the mode appeared.
Practical advice for Series S owners
- Install the latest update, since the reported mode arrived around version 1.3.0.
- Look for the Quality and Performance options in the game's settings.
- If your TV supports VRR, enable it in the console's video settings. I haven't verified exact menu labels or supported VRR ranges.
- Compare both modes yourself. If you prefer the softer visuals of the original 30fps presentation, stay on Quality.
Bottom line
A Series S Performance mode looks real, and the early footage suggests it works decently with some visual cost. Official confirmation and proper frame-time testing are still missing. Digital Foundry, if it revisits the game, would be the likely source for hard numbers.
