NCSoft is preparing to take AION 2 beyond its South Korean and Taiwanese launch markets, with Founder’s Pack holders scheduled to enter on September 30, 2026 and the wider global launch set for October 5. For PC players, it is a new MMORPG arriving on Steam and NCSoft’s PURPLE platform. For Microsoft, it is a live test of an Azure-backed operating partnership. For NCSoft, the harder question is whether a game outside the Lineage family can build a lasting international audience.

A PC launch with Azure behind the operating plan

Unlike the existing South Korean and Taiwanese service, the global version is being developed for PC only. NCSoft has confirmed launch server locations in North America, South America, Europe and Japan. That is more precise than describing the fourth location simply as “Asia”: a confirmed Japanese server does not, by itself, establish the availability or location of servers elsewhere in the region.

NCSoft says it plans to use Azure’s global infrastructure to handle heavy simultaneous access and traffic that varies by region. Its announced arrangement also calls for Microsoft’s global technical organization and Korean team to help with performance checks before launch and incident response after service begins. That is meaningful operational support, but it is a plan, not a published performance result. Neither company has disclosed a capacity target, a detailed hosting architecture or evidence that Azure alone runs every component of the game.

The distinction matters on launch day. A cloud provider can supply infrastructure and engineering assistance; it cannot make crowded login queues, game-server behavior and every player’s connection disappear by executive announcement. NCSoft’s own Steam notice says players may enter a queue when a server reaches capacity. Eligible accounts can receive priority placement, but NCSoft explicitly says priority is not a guarantee of immediate entry.

NCSoft ran a public launch-scale test on September 17 and 18, with two six-hour sessions on Steam and PURPLE. Test progress was wiped afterward, and purchases and trading systems were unavailable during the sessions. The exercise gave NCSoft an opportunity to check its launch environment, but those restrictions also limit what the test can demonstrate about sustained, fully featured service once paying members and the wider public arrive.

What PC players should know before September 30

  • Early entry requires a Founder’s Pack. Advanced Access is scheduled for September 30 through October 4; official launch follows on October 5. NCSoft describes the full release as free-to-play.
  • The Steam playtest installation is separate. NCSoft says Steam testers must uninstall the Playtest app and download AION 2 separately for Advanced Access. It says PURPLE testers have no equivalent follow-up step. Nothing earned in the September test carries over.
  • Check language support rather than assuming it. Digital Today reports ten launch languages, including simplified and traditional Chinese. NCSoft’s Steam pre-release FAQ and store listing, however, list eight supported languages, without either Chinese option. That discrepancy should not be resolved in favor of the larger number until NCSoft updates its official listings.

The bigger test: revenue that lasts

AION 2, the follow-up to the original Aion, debuted in South Korea and Taiwan on November 19, 2025. NCSoft says cumulative revenue passed KRW 100 billion by January 3, 2026, and that more than one million characters had purchased memberships. Characters are not the same measure as unique players—a useful caution when assessing the size of an MMO audience.

The game generated KRW 136.8 billion in the first quarter of 2026, according to NCSoft. Digital Today reports KRW 71.9 billion in the second quarter, a decline of roughly 47%. That fall does not erase the first-quarter result, but it makes retention and durable spending more important benchmarks than a crowded first weekend. Digital Today says NCSoft characterized the decline as post-launch revenue stabilization and reported improved indicators after a July update; the global audience has yet to provide a comparable track record.

Nor has Lineage stepped aside. NCSoft reported KRW 185.5 billion in second-quarter revenue from Lineage Classic alone, helping its PC-game business set another quarterly record. The company also said overseas markets contributed 52% of total revenue that quarter, but that company-wide figure is not evidence that AION 2 has already succeeded in North America or Europe. Its global launch has not happened yet.

That leaves two tests running at once. Microsoft and NCSoft must operate a responsive service across the announced regions; NCSoft must then give players reasons to stay after the novelty and launch queues fade. Steam activity and reviews may offer early public signals, but a lasting non-Lineage business will be judged over months, not by the busiest hour of October 5.

Update: AION 2’s paid early-access window is now open (September 30, 2026)

NCSoft has reportedly opened AION 2’s global PC Advance Access on September 30, according to Notebookcheck, moving the rollout from a scheduled launch milestone to an available service for Founder’s Pack holders. The outlet reports that early access is available through Steam and NCSoft’s PURPLE launcher.

Notebookcheck also reports pricing of $24.99 for the Standard Founder’s Pack and $49.99 for Deluxe, with an Ultimate tier additionally available. According to the outlet, all three tiers provide the same five-day early-access window; their differences are primarily bundled extras. That means buying a more expensive tier does not extend the early-access period.

For players deciding whether to pay now, the reported opening creates a choice between entering during the paid window and waiting for the October 5 free-to-play release. It does not yet establish how smoothly the Azure-backed rollout is operating: Notebookcheck’s report provides no server-capacity figures, queue measurements or regional performance results. The opening is therefore a launch-status update, not confirmation that the infrastructure has passed its operational test.
