A curious magpie pecks at glowing blue crystals in an overgrown schoolyard beneath a starry sunset sky.
Bad Magpie has landed on Steam and Xbox PC with a free demo ahead of its planned 2027 release. Milktooth’s one-winged troublemaker arrived on October 8, 2026, according to both storefronts. For Windows players, the important distinction is that this is a playable preview—not the full game, and not an announced Xbox console demo.

A curious magpie pecks at glowing blue crystals in an overgrown schoolyard beneath a starry sunset sky. What the demo actually includes

Cinelinx reports that the demo takes place in the school biome, where players can explore and hunt for meteorites. Milktooth’s Steam description narrows the scope: the preview occupies a corner of one of the full game’s three areas, with meteorite shards scattered around the map as its collecting objective. Expect a contained introduction rather than access to the entire open world.

The premise pairs slapstick with a more melancholy setup. The protagonist has one wing, a missing flock, and a fixation on a fallen star that wants shiny offerings. Milktooth describes the broader adventure as a small, densely packed, nonlinear world built around stealing, pecking, combining objects, and experimenting with puzzles that have multiple solutions. Apparently, having a beak is sufficient qualification for a career in property damage.

There is also a useful presentation detail: the demo is not entirely text-free. Although Milktooth intends the full game’s story to unfold through gameplay, the preview includes brief text before and after play to establish the scene.

Xbox PC does not mean Xbox console

Microsoft’s Xbox Store listing identifies the demo as free and lists PC and handheld under its supported play devices. It also carries a handheld-optimization label. That supports the Xbox PC announcement, but it does not establish availability on Xbox Series X|S—or guarantee performance on every handheld Windows device.

Steam’s separate demo page now displays an Install Demo option. On the full-game page, the demo download appears alongside a notice that the main game is not yet available, with 2027 still shown as its planned release year. Those are separate products; the unreleased-game notice does not mean the preview is unavailable.

A Windows requirements caveat

PC players should treat the demo’s published hardware information cautiously. Its Steam page lists Windows 10 64-bit, DirectX 12, and an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, but also shows 4 MB of RAM and 4 MB of storage. Those entries appear erroneous and should not be treated as dependable installation requirements.

For comparison, the full-game listing specifies 4 GB RAM, 4 GB storage, and a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or Radeon RX 570 with 4 GB VRAM. These provide context, not verified requirements for the demo, and do not establish its frame rates or handheld performance.

The practical takeaway is straightforward: Windows players have a free, limited preview on two PC storefronts, while the complete adventure remains planned for 2027. Keep the demo’s scope—and its questionable requirements entries—in mind before expecting the whole flock.
