The short version
- Fastest AMD gaming chip (by the numbers): Ryzen 7 9850X3D, by a small margin.
- Best high-end value: Usually the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, depending on live prices.
- Mid-range and budget: BGR points to the Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 5 7600X. Those are its picks, and I haven't seen independent 2026 testing that confirms them as the value winners.
- Esports-only players: Probably don't need any of the expensive options.
What BGR recommends
BGR's high-end pick is the 9800X3D. It says the chip can reach triple-digit frame rates in anything, and that it pairs best with a very powerful graphics card. The outlet cites a price of about $479 "at full price", with deals becoming more common.
BGR also gives these figures:
- Cyberpunk 2077: around 200 FPS average at high 1080p settings.
- Star Wars Outlaws: over 150 FPS at 4K ultra.
- Counter-Strike 2: nearly 700 FPS at 1080p and over 600 FPS at 4K.
Lower down, BGR calls the Ryzen 5 7600X the best budget AMD option. It lists the chip at $219 and says it can hold a locked 120 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p medium with a decent mid-range GPU. It also reports over 300 FPS in Counter-Strike with 1% lows above 200 FPS.
For the Ryzen 7 7700X, BGR cites about 150 FPS in Cyberpunk at medium settings and roughly 60 FPS at 4K with a high-end GPU. It puts the price at about $300.
These are BGR's numbers. The article doesn't spell out the full test setups, so read them as ballpark indications rather than promises for your own build.
The 2026 wrinkle: the Ryzen 7 9850X3D
AMD released the Ryzen 7 9850X3D on January 29, 2026. GamersNexus says it launched at $500 with a higher boost clock than the 9800X3D. The two chips are otherwise nearly identical. Corsair's comparison describes the 9850X3D as essentially a higher-clocked 9800X3D with the same 8-core X3D layout and 96MB of L3 cache, differing in max boost (5.6GHz vs 5.2GHz) and price.
How much faster is it?
Not much. GamersNexus found it at best 4% faster than the 9800X3D and sometimes identical. Tom's Hardware's current best-CPU guide says the 9850X3D "claims a new title" as the fastest gaming processor, but that it lives in the 9800X3D's shadow. Its guide update puts the gap at about 3% on average and keeps the 9800X3D as its top overall recommendation because of price.
WIRED's reviewer saw the same thing. In his Cyberpunk 2077 test at 1440p with ultra settings and ray tracing on, the 9800X3D delivered 69.61 FPS against the 9850X3D's 71.19 FPS. He called that about a 2 percent difference. He also said there is "zero reason" for existing 9800X3D owners to upgrade.
Heat and power
The 9850X3D runs hotter. GamersNexus measured an all-core steady-state of about 83°C for the 9850X3D versus 74-75°C for the 9800X3D, both on a 360mm liquid cooler. If you're considering the 9850X3D, budget for good cooling. Tom's Hardware's review headline also mentions roughly 30% more power for about 3% more performance.
Which one should you buy?
It comes down to the price gap on the day you buy:
- Gap of $30 or less, both at normal retail: WIRED's view is that you might as well take the faster chip.
- Gap of $50 or more: The 9800X3D is the better buy. Club386 found that an extra $20 at launch bought only about eight more frames per second across its suite. It also noted the real retail gap had widened to $56.
- A free game or discount on the 9800X3D: That settles it in the older chip's favor, as WIRED noted.
- Already own a 9800X3D: Don't upgrade for gaming.
Prices move constantly. The figures in these reviews date from early 2026, and BGR's $479 is a snapshot. Check live pricing before you decide.
What you need to know about the platform
Both X3D chips use the AM5 socket and DDR5 memory. If you're coming from an AM4 system, you're buying a new motherboard and RAM along with the CPU. AMD's 9800X3D page lists it as an 8-core, 16-thread Zen 5 part with a 4.7 GHz base clock, up to 5.2 GHz boost and 96 MB of L3 cache. I couldn't retrieve AMD's page for this piece, so confirm chipset support and BIOS requirements against your specific motherboard's CPU support list.
A good X3D chip also tolerates slower memory better than most CPUs. GamersNexus tested the 9850X3D with DDR5-4800 and found only small losses in several games, because the extra cache makes up for much of the deficit. That's less true of CPUs without 3D V-Cache.
Do you need a flagship at all?
Probably not, for a lot of players. Tom's Hardware's guide cautions that 3D V-Cache doesn't help every game equally, and that the benefit shrinks as resolution rises. It also says eight cores are enough for gaming-focused builds. If you play at 4K with a GPU-limited title, a pricier CPU may do little for your frame rate. That money often does more in the graphics card, memory or storage.
BGR makes the same point about esports titles. Games like Counter-Strike 2 and League of Legends run at high frame rates even on modest hardware.
The other X3D options
The AMD gaming lineup is wider than BGR's three picks suggest. Tom's Hardware's September 2026 update notes several refreshes:
- A Ryzen 7 7700X3D as a cheaper alternative to the 7800X3D.
- A refreshed 5800X3D for gamers on DDR4 platforms.
- The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition, AMD's first CPU with 3D V-Cache on both CCDs, which Tom's Hardware calls the most powerful chip from AMD currently available.
At launch, GamersNexus also pointed to the 7800X3D as a strong value alternative, since it was up to $125 cheaper then. That advice may have shifted since, so check current stock and prices.
Tom's Hardware also says AMD and Intel are expected to launch new consumer platforms toward the end of this year or early next year. If you can wait, that may change the pricing picture.
Bottom line
BGR is right that you don't need the most expensive chip. For high-end gaming, though, the 2026 answer has two parts:
- The 9850X3D is technically the fastest AMD gaming CPU, but only by around 3-4%.
- The 9800X3D is usually the better buy while it stays cheaper. It runs cooler and uses less power.
- For tighter budgets, BGR's 7700X and 7600X picks are reasonable starting points, but compare them against current prices and newer X3D options before buying.
