shadPS4 and BB Launcher Turn Bloodborne Into a Windows Project
The setup has two pieces. shadPS4 is the emulator core. Its developers describe it as an early PlayStation 4 emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS, written in C++, and the project README warns users plainly not to expect a flawless experience. The core has no graphical interface of its own. The project sends end users to a separate QtLauncher for that, and to a community-maintained compatibility list to check how a given game runs. The README names Bloodborne first among the titles the emulator can run successfully.
BB Launcher is a separate GPL-3.0 project that sits on top of shadPS4 and is built specifically for Bloodborne. According to its maintainers, it can update the emulator, download game patches, manage mods, adjust settings, remap controls, back up saves, and fix a crash-sound glitch tied to running the game at 60fps. Those are the maintainers' claims. They show what the tool is for, not that every configuration will be stable.
Litchfield built his setup by following a video guide from YouTuber Retro Renew. His write-up doesn't list the shadPS4 build, BB Launcher version, game patch level or mod versions he used. Anyone trying to copy his results is working from the general approach, not a fixed recipe.
An RX 9070 XT at 1440p60, and One Glitch No Setting Would Fix
Litchfield calls his experience at 1440p and 60fps on the Radeon RX 9070 XT "pleasant." He also says it's still "slightly janky." His comparison is an unpatched multiplatform Unreal Engine 5 console port, and he says the hitches reminded him of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. He doesn't give his CPU, RAM, Windows build or frame-time data. So this is one player's report on one system, not a benchmark.
The most concrete technical detail is a rendering fault. At two loading transitions, the entrance to the Grand Cathedral in Yharnam and the elevator-depot shortcut in the Forbidden Woods, stepping through the doorway about seven times out of ten turned his view into what he calls a "neon nightmare." The only way out was to quit and reload.
He went through the usual fixes without success:
- He changed the rendering resolution.
- He adjusted VRAM usage settings.
- He tried different shadPS4 versions.
- He changed lighting settings.
- He toggled AMD FSR upscaling.
He couldn't tell whether the fault came from the emulator itself or from the "fromsoftserve BB Remaster" mod he had installed. His last option was a full reinstall, which he decided wasn't worth it for an edge case he could work around by reloading. For anyone troubleshooting a similar problem, the lesson is that a modded, emulated game has more than one moving part. When a bug appears only with a mod loaded, the mod is as likely a suspect as the emulator. This is a single report on AMD hardware. It hasn't been confirmed as a general shadPS4 defect, and there is no known fix.
Digital Foundry's RTX 4080 Tests Frame the Hardware Question
The hardware question has no official answer. Litchfield notes that nobody publishes minimum or recommended specs for emulated Bloodborne. He mentions a Reddit commenter who says the game was playable on a GeForce GTX 1650, which he couldn't check. He also offers his own guess, clearly labeled as a wager, that an RTX 3070-class card is where reliable 1080p/60fps should start. Neither is a tested requirement.
Digital Foundry's two rounds of testing show how quickly things have moved. In January 2025, as reported by 80 Level, Digital Foundry's Thomas Morgan ran the game on a Ryzen 7 5700X with an RTX 4080. The CPU became the bottleneck, preventing a stable 60 FPS: it dropped to around 45 FPS in crowded areas, with one CPU core pinned at 100%. Morgan played at 1152p, and dropping to 1080p didn't fix the problem. In the same coverage, a viewer's system with an Intel Core i5-12600K, an RTX 4080 and 32 GB of RAM ran the game at 60 FPS and even higher. That result is a reminder that single-threaded CPU performance mattered more than the graphics card.
A year later the picture had changed. In January 2026, Digital Foundry reported frame rates up to 60 FPS at 4K on an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080, though it noted that going above 60 FPS may cause glitches. The outlet summarized its findings by saying 4K at 60fps and beyond is now viable. That is the demonstration Litchfield refers to. His 1440p RX 9070 XT result fits it without confirming it independently.
Separate footage points the same way. Notebookcheck reported on comparisons by the YouTube channel ElAnalistaDeBits, where a rig with an RTX 4060 Ti showed frame rates in the 80-100 range, and at 1440p an RTX 5070 produced similar results. Those are one creator's captures under their own settings, not controlled benchmarks. Together, the reports suggest current midrange GPUs can go well beyond the PS4's 30fps target. The 2025 Digital Foundry result is the caution: on older or weaker CPUs, the processor may be the limit, not the graphics card.
shadPS4 v0.18.0 Shows How Fast the Target Moves
The version history is the strongest argument that any setup guide will date quickly. On September 24, 2026, the day Litchfield's piece was published, the shadPS4 releases page listed a new prerelease build. Stable v0.18.0, codenamed "UltraPersona," had shipped on August 18. His article doesn't say which build he used, so there's no basis for linking his results to either one.
The recent release notes include changes that matter specifically to Windows users:
- v0.18.0 adds experimental "red zone" protection. The developers say it fixes crashes and undefined behavior caused by Windows exception handling, a problem they describe as limited to 12th-generation and newer Intel CPUs on Windows.
- v0.18.0 was released mainly because shadNet authorization broke in some cases in v0.17.0. shadNet is the project's own networking backend.
- v0.17.0, released July 30, added ZArchive support, which lets a game install be packed into a single compressed file instead of thousands of loose files. It was also the first build with shadNet.
- v0.16.0, released June 1, brought a new configuration system with save and trophy migration, a controller-friendly Big Picture Mode, local multiplayer and a dedicated mods folder.
The red-zone fix is a good example of why emulator bugs can depend on your hardware. A crash seen only on one CPU generation under Windows may have nothing to do with the game or your GPU driver. Anyone troubleshooting shadPS4 on a recent Intel system should check which build introduced that workaround. Because the developers call the fix experimental, it's also something to toggle when isolating a problem.
BB Launcher Rewrites Access to Bloodborne's Chalice Dungeons
The PC route did more than improve frame rate and resolution for Litchfield. Chalice Dungeons are Bloodborne's procedurally generated dungeons, and on PS4 the shared versions require an online connection. He never paid for PlayStation Network, so he had mostly skipped them. BB Launcher can force-add generated dungeons to a save file and ships with a library of popular ones people use to farm loot and experience.
This is a community tool changing how you reach game content. It is not an official offline dungeon browser. Litchfield calls the Chalice system perhaps FromSoftware's most poorly explained mechanic. He also says the dungeon grinding produced his strongest Bloodborne character yet, and he worries the final story areas will now feel too easy. If you care about the intended difficulty curve, it's worth knowing that the launcher's convenience features can change it.
The Legal and Practical Hurdle of Dumping a PS4 Copy
Litchfield says the biggest obstacle is getting the game files from your legally purchased copy, and that the process is hard for non-experts. The shadPS4 README adds a second requirement: some PlayStation 4 firmware modules must go in the emulator's sys_modules folder, and the project says those modules must be dumped from a PlayStation 4 console you legally own. In practice, this is a PC project that starts with PS4 hardware, not a download-and-play experience.
Litchfield calls the process "potentially DMCA-infringing." This article doesn't cover dumping methods, and the legal position depends on your jurisdiction and exactly what you copy and how. What the project's own documentation does establish is that it expects the files to come from hardware and software you own. It doesn't supply them.
The alternative still isn't coming. Litchfield argues that a light-touch official PC port has "never felt further away." He points to Sony pulling back from PC releases and, in his account, recently shutting down remaster studio Bluepoint. He also says FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki has told PC Gamer he isn't opposed to the idea. Those are his reporting and interpretation. Either way, emulation is the only way to play Bloodborne on Windows today.
Who Should Set Up shadPS4 and Who Should Wait
The decision depends on two things: whether you can legally produce the files from a PS4 and a copy you own, and whether you're comfortable troubleshooting unsupported software. If you have both, current reports say the result is worth it. Digital Foundry demonstrated 4K/60fps on an RTX 4080, and Litchfield got a smooth 1440p/60fps on an RX 9070 XT. If you don't have a PS4 to dump from, or you expect a console-style launch-and-play setup, emulation will frustrate you.
- Treat Litchfield's RX 9070 XT result and Digital Foundry's RTX 4080 tests as demonstrations on specific systems. No one has published official minimum or recommended specs.
- Check your CPU as well as your GPU. Digital Foundry's January 2025 test was held back by one maxed-out CPU core on a Ryzen 7 5700X.
- Write down your shadPS4 build, BB Launcher version and mod list before you start. Stable and prerelease builds change often, and you need that record when a fault appears.
- If you hit a graphics fault, disable mods before blaming the emulator. Litchfield couldn't tell whether his "neon" transitions came from shadPS4 or the Remaster mod.
- On 12th-generation or newer Intel CPUs under Windows, run shadPS4 v0.18.0 or later, which adds the developers' experimental red-zone workaround for crashes specific to that setup.
- Expect BB Launcher's Chalice Dungeon injection to make your character stronger than the story expects, and skip it if the intended difficulty curve matters to you.
Two years of progress took Bloodborne on shadPS4 from a CPU-limited curiosity to a 4K/60fps showcase, and Litchfield's 30 hours show it holds up for an actual playthrough, rough spots included. There's no official port on the way, so PC access will keep depending on volunteer releases like v0.18.0 and the prerelease builds after it. Each build can fix a bug or add a new one, which makes keeping a record of your working setup the most useful habit for anyone who plays Bloodborne on Windows.
