A gothic castle scene frames a gaming setup with a 120Hz monitor, console, controller, and a cracked storage warning.
Konami's new Castlevania game has been out for about a week, and its biggest problem so far isn't on screen. On some PCs there is no screen at all, just black. Konami says it has shipped an update for the launch failure on high refresh rate monitors, but warns the fix is partial. It has also posted a separate warning that Xbox players who move between Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC could lose their save. That second one deserves some respect.

MP1st reports that Evil Empire has released the first title update for Castlevania: Belmont's Curse. It calls the patch a small hotfix that shows up on consoles as update 1.001.002, and dates the story October 21, 2026. Konami's own PC notices tell a slightly different story on timing and version numbers, so let's separate what's confirmed from what isn't.

The official notice is short. On Steam, Konami says it has released an update to address an issue where the game may fail to launch and a black screen shows for High Refresh Rate Monitors. It also hedges: "While we expect this update to improve the issue, it may still occur in certain environments."

Konami says it is continuing to work towards a full resolution as soon as possible. If the game still won't start after the patch, the official instruction is to contact Konami customer support.

The version and date mismatch

The labels don't line up across platforms:

DateOctober 21, 2026October 16, 2026

SteamDB lists the PC patch as 16 October 2026 Build 25975867. KONAMI UK's post on X described the fix as addressing the black screen while playing on Steam®.

The official material I reviewed confirms the fix and what it's for. It does not independently confirm the console number 1.001.002 or an October 21 release date for this fix. Console version strings often use a different format from PC builds, so the two labels may well describe the same work. Until Konami says so, though, treat them as separate labels rather than one cross-platform release.

Section summary: Konami has issued a partial fix for the high refresh rate black screen. The Steam build is labelled 1.1.3 and dated October 16. The console number 1.001.002 comes from MP1st's report.

The Windows workaround, step by step

The launch bug goes back further. Konami's known-issues page, dated October 14, 2026, links the launch failure on Steam and Xbox on PC to one specific setup: V-Sync turned OFF and FPS set to Unlimited. Konami's official workaround:

  1. Set your monitor's refresh rate in Windows to below 60Hz.
  2. Launch the game and choose Settings from the title screen.
  3. Under Video Settings, turn V-Sync ON, then close the game.
  4. Put your monitor's refresh rate back to its original setting.
  5. Konami says the game should then launch and play normally.

If it still fails after several tries, Konami says to contact Customer Support. Note that this workaround is for the V-Sync-off, unlimited-FPS case only. It isn't guaranteed to fix every black screen, especially since Konami admits some setups may still be affected after the patch.

Community workarounds (unofficial)

Players haven't just waited. On the game's Steam forums, one user suggested NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > add Castlevania > set Max Frame Rate to 60 and Vertical Sync to On. Another wrote that the trick worked but complained "Shame I can't make full use of my 360Hz monitor until they fix the issue but 144 is still good."

A modder on Nexus Mods posted a technical explanation along with a fix. According to the mod page, the game ignores a splash-screen load request while it is still finishing the previous load, and that only gets cleared on its 50 Hz physics tick. At high frame rates those few frames can pass without a tick, the request is lost and the screen stays black. That fits the pattern players saw: high frame rates trigger it, and capping at 60 avoids it. Konami hasn't confirmed this diagnosis. The mod needs a BepInEx install and is a third-party change to your game files, so think twice before using it, especially on the Xbox app version.

Section summary: Konami's official workaround is to drop below 60Hz, turn V-Sync on, then restore your refresh rate. Capping frame rates in the GPU driver is a popular unofficial alternative.

The bigger worry: Xbox cross-save can overwrite your progress

This is the issue that could actually cost you something. Konami posted a separate notice on October 21, 2026: save data may not load correctly when switching between Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. It's a different problem from the monitor bug, and the official notices don't say the refresh rate update fixes it.

How it goes wrong:

  • You switch platforms, and your existing save may not appear.
  • If you create a new save while the old one is missing, Konami says the original may be overwritten and cannot be recovered.

Konami's advice until there's a fix:

  • Do not create a new save if your progress is missing after switching platforms.
  • Keep playing on your current platform. Don't move between Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC.
  • A fix is planned for both platforms. After both are updated to the latest version, cross-save should work normally.
  • If your save shows correctly on the save selection screen after updating, it's safe to switch again.

No release date has been given for the fix. Konami says it will announce the update when it ships.

For people who play on both a console and a Windows PC through the Xbox app, this is the opposite of the "play anywhere" promise. My advice, based on general experience with cloud-sync bugs: if your save is missing, close the game. Don't start a new game just to check things are working. That's how the overwrite happens.

Section summary: Xbox players should stay on one platform until Konami's patch ships on both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Never start a new save if your old one has disappeared.

Other open issues on Konami's list

Konami's notice also lists two more unresolved problems from October 14:

  • Steam Deck: Some UI elements may appear partly off-screen. Konami says it's looking into a fix.
  • System language (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Xbox on PC): Players using certain system languages, mainly Arabic, may get stuck on the title page after saving and quitting to it. The temporary fix is to switch your system language to another supported one, such as English, to load your existing save.

Konami says it is making a patch for these issues but hasn't given a date.

Analysis: a familiar launch-week pattern

A game that breaks when the frame rate is uncapped isn't new. Game logic tied to frame timing has caused trouble for years, and 144Hz, 240Hz and 360Hz monitors are now common on gaming PCs, so a bug that only shows up above 60fps will hit a lot of players. The game went live on Steam on Oct 14, so some players spent their launch week looking at a black screen.

To Konami's credit, it has been open about what it knows. It published the triggering settings, gave a step-by-step workaround, and said plainly that the patch may not fix every system. The cross-save warning is the most useful notice of the lot: it names the exact action that destroys progress and tells players to avoid it.

What to do now

  • Steam / Xbox on PC players: Update the game. If it still shows a black screen, use Konami's sub-60Hz and V-Sync workaround, then contact support if that fails.
  • Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC players: Don't switch platforms yet, and never create a new save if your progress is missing.
  • Steam Deck and Arabic-language players: Use the temporary workarounds above while Konami works on a patch.
