A creator on X says they got Cyberpunk 2077 running on Windows XP. TweakTown reported the claim on October 12, 2026, and so far it is only a claim. The clip shows something XP-flavored. It does not show how, or on what, the game is actually running.

A Windows XP-style desktop displays a futuristic neon city scene with a seated figure and a flying car. What the creator claims

TweakTown's report attributes the clip to an X creator called foxgaming_. The footage reportedly shows the game's opening moments with Jackie Welles in Night City. The game sits in a window over the XP "Bliss"-style wallpaper and blue taskbar.

According to TweakTown, the creator says the work took about a week of AI-assisted coding with "Claude Opus 5.5". The creator also claims 25–30 FPS with graphics settings enabled. TweakTown says the footage looks closer to below 20 FPS. That is a reporter's visual estimate, not a benchmark.

What hasn't been shown

TweakTown says the creator hasn't explained the compatibility layers involved. It also says it is unclear whether the game runs natively or through emulation. From the reporting, none of the following has been published:

  • hardware specifications
  • the game build
  • resolution and settings
  • a frame-rate measurement method
  • project files or reproduction steps

TweakTown also raises the possibility of an XP skin on another operating system, or of editing trickery. Neither is demonstrated. A wallpaper and a taskbar prove very little about what is underneath them. XP themes and shell replacements are easy to get, and a window in a screen recording can come from a VM, a remote stream, or a different OS.

The official baseline

CD Projekt RED's system-requirements page covers the base game and Phantom Liberty from Update 2.0 onward. The minimum tier targets low settings at 1080p and an expected 30 FPS. It lists 64-bit Windows 10 and a Core i7-6700 or Ryzen 5 1600. It also lists a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, Radeon RX 580 8GB or Arc A380, 12GB of RAM and a 70GB SSD. The page says the latest DirectX 12 is required.

The support baseline has moved up several times:

  • In February 2022, Windows 7 support was discontinued.
  • In late May 2026, the developer's support pages said Windows 11 is the minimum OS now that Microsoft has ended Windows 10 support. That report is from Game Rant.

XP is more than a decade older than the oldest OS the game ever officially supported. In 2020, lead graphics programmer Marcin Gollent told PC Games Hardware that DX12 support for Windows 7 SP1 would let the game run there. XP had no such path. Microsoft never shipped DirectX 12 for it. DX12 itself arrived with Windows 10 and was back-ported only to Windows 7 SP1 for selected titles. That last part is general background, not something drawn from the sources above.

Why a real XP run would be hard

TweakTown says XP lacks many of the modern APIs and hardware features the game relies on. The core obstacle is that the game targets DirectX 12. Making it run on XP would need one of these:

  • a very deep translation or shim layer
  • a heavily rewritten renderer
  • a different execution environment entirely

This is my analysis, not something the creator has said. The reporting doesn't say which approach, if any, was used.

Other limits would still apply to a native XP run. The game is a 64-bit title, and the current minimum RAM is 12GB. Those are the points to watch if the creator publishes anything. This doesn't make the feat impossible. Modders have done odd things before, and AI coding assistants can speed up tedious porting work. But "AI wrote it in a week" is a claim about effort, not about a working result.

What would settle it

These are verification criteria, not evidence the creator has supplied:

  1. An uncut capture showing the OS identified through system information while the game is running.
  2. A clear statement of the execution path: bare-metal XP, VM, emulator, compatibility layer, streaming, or another OS with an XP skin.
  3. Build details: the game version, XP edition and service pack, hardware, and any modifications or translation components.
  4. An on-screen frame counter over a sustained gameplay segment, with resolution and settings disclosed.
  5. Independent reproduction, ideally from published files or steps.

Bottom line

For now this is a viral clip, not a verified port. It is also not a supported or sensible way to play the game. Anyone wanting to play Cyberpunk 2077 on Windows should follow the developer's current guidance, which is Windows 11. If the creator publishes technical details, this could become an impressive compatibility story. Until then, treat it as unproven.
