Discord Nitro Includes Xbox Game Pass Starter: Eligibility, Cloud Limits and Subscriber Perks

What Nitro members get

Discord says its standard Nitro membership includes Game Pass Starter Edition at no additional charge in eligible regions. The offering has more than 50 downloadable PC and console games and 10 hours of cloud gaming per month. Discord names Stardew Valley, DayZ and Fallout 4 among its examples; the selection can change. It also describes an opportunity to earn up to $25 a year in the Xbox Store through Rewards—not a guaranteed $25 credit.

The cloud limit matters, but it does not put a ten-hour timer on downloaded games. Discord says downloading and playing titles in the included library on a PC or Xbox console does not use cloud hours. Cloud time begins counting when a streaming session starts and resets at the beginning of each calendar month. For a Windows player who mainly installs games locally, that is a meaningful distinction.

This benefit is not for people who already subscribe to Game Pass. Discord’s eligibility rules require an active standard Nitro subscription and an eligible region; they exclude Nitro Basic, Nitro Classic, Nitro Credits without a subscription, and certain promotional Nitro trials. The United States is on Discord’s eligible-region list. Starter Edition access is tied to Nitro and ends when the qualifying membership ends.

How to claim Starter Edition

Discord’s instructions put the claim process in its desktop app or browser:

1. Open Direct Messages, then select Nitro Home.
2. Find the Xbox Game Pass card or banner and select Claim.
3. Follow the activation prompts and link a Microsoft account.

An eligible member who cannot see the benefit should first check the subscription and regional requirements. Discord also recommends unlinking and relinking an Xbox account that was previously connected to Discord if the Game Pass benefit does not appear. A Microsoft account is required to redeem and use Starter Edition.

Already paying for Game Pass? The benefit is different

Game Pass subscribers do not need Nitro to receive the partnership’s three Discord perks. Discord’s support guidance lists 250 Orbs each month, a 1.2× Orbs multiplier for completed Quests, and a Discord Shop discount for eligible members who link their Xbox and Discord accounts. Discord says Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate all qualify. These perks are not a full Nitro subscription, and the Quest multiplier does not stack with a Nitro multiplier.

To set up that connection on a Windows PC, open Discord User Settings → Connections, select Xbox, then follow the authorization prompts. Discord says the account must also be claimed with a valid email address to receive the perks. If a linked account shows no benefit, confirm Game Pass is active and try unlinking and relinking the Xbox account.

Xbox also announced a discovery feature: when a friend’s Discord stream or game activity shows a supported Game Pass title, players can look for Play, then Xbox Game Pass, to jump toward that game. That builds on existing Xbox–Discord voice and streaming features, but it should not be mistaken for a newly announced Discord app for Xbox or unrestricted access to the full Game Pass catalogue. The practical takeaway is simpler: check which subscription you already have before claiming anything. That determines which side of the partnership—and which eligibility rules—apply.
