Rematch moves down to Game Pass Essential
Microsoft announced the change in its mid-September Game Pass roundup on Xbox Wire. There, Rematch sits alone under a "Coming Soon to Game Pass Essential" heading, listed for Cloud, Xbox Series X|S and PC on September 25. The listing reads "Now with Game Pass Essential; joining Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass." Xbox Wire describes the game as designed for 5v5 online play, with each player controlling one athlete and no offsides, fouls or downtime.
Other coverage confirms the change went live on schedule. Pure Xbox's September 25 roundup said the Essential tier is getting a new game today in Rematch, whilst Premium subscribers are being treated to another solid FPS, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. TrueAchievements reported the same pairing, saying Essential members can jump into Rematch.
The game itself has been out for a while. Microsoft's Store listing gives June 19, 2025 as the release date, names Sloclap as developer and Sloclap and Kepler Interactive as publishers. Game Rant notes that Rematch originally launched for PC and consoles in June 2025, when it also made its day-one debut as part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate library. So the news is about who can access it: players on the entry-level tier who never had it before.
The Xbox Store listing for Rematch changed on arrival day
This is the part that matters most if you actually plan to play. An earlier version of the Rematch Store page, still visible in search indexes, said the game was cloud playable with XBOX Game Pass Premium and Ultimate and that a game purchase required to stream with XBOX Game Pass Essential. The current US Store listing reads differently. It calls Rematch a "cloud playable game included with Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate" and lists Essential, Premium, PC Game Pass and Ultimate under its included subscriptions.
The fairest reading is that the Store page was updated when the tier change took effect, and the old cloud-streaming restriction for Essential no longer applies. Both versions have been public, though, and cached copies of the page can linger. If you run into the old purchase prompt, check the listing in the Xbox app while signed in with your own account. That shows your real entitlement better than any screenshot or article.
The current listing still carries one older line: the game "requires online multiplayer subscription to play on console (Game Pass Core or Ultimate, sold separately)." Game Pass Core is the tier's previous name. Game Rant notes that Since launching XGP Core (nowadays XGP Essential) in September 2023, Microsoft has consistently expanded it with new titles several times per year. Aroged's same-day report adds that the lowest-cost tier of Microsoft's service allows multiplayer games to be played on consoles. Putting those together (our inference), an Essential subscription should cover both the game and the console online requirement. That matters here because Rematch is online-only.
What Rematch offers on Xbox Series X|S, PC and cloud
Xbox's Store listing supports Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming and handheld play. It lists online co-op and online multiplayer for teams of five, 60 fps or higher, Optimized for Xbox Series X|S status, achievements, cloud saves and Xbox Play Anywhere. Play Anywhere means one entitlement and your progress carry across console and Windows PC, so an Essential subscriber can switch between a Series X and a gaming laptop without starting over.
Handheld support is described inconsistently. Game Rant says the game is labeled optimized for handheld play on the Xbox Store, and the Store's "Play with" field does include Handheld. However, WindowsForum's earlier coverage of the September 25 changes noted that the Handheld designation Xbox uses for games "optimized for handheld play" is not on this one in the Xbox Wire Essential entry. Handheld PC owners should treat Store support as the more specific signal. The Wire post simply lists three platforms.
The game itself has no player stats. The Store copy says wins come down to "player skill and tactical coordination." You control one athlete from a third-person view, as Pure Xbox puts it: Control one player and compete with your team in fast-paced 5v5 matches from an immersive third-person perspective. The Store also shows paid Pro and Elite editions, upgrade add-ons and a $4.99 Blue Lock Training Pack, and the listing notes in-app purchases. The subscription covers the base game, not the cosmetic tiers.
Season 5 and patch 1.205.002 change the game Essential players are joining
The tier change landed a day after Sloclap's biggest recent update. The developer's patch notes list version 1.205.002, released September 24, 2026, on a set schedule: patch at 8:00 GMT, Store update at 10:00 GMT, Season 4 ending at 12:00 GMT, and Season 5 plus the Blue Lock collaboration starting at 14:00 GMT. Season 5 is built around a crossover with the soccer manga Blue Lock. It includes a free Event Pass, themed cosmetics and premium bundles based on four characters. Game Rant names them as Yoichi Isagi, Rin Itoshi, Meguru Bachira, and Seishiro Nagi.
The headline addition is Aura Striker, a limited-time 3v3 mode. Sloclap says each player has an aura gauge that fills over time, faster when you intercept the ball, with a multiplier to help players who rarely get possession. When the gauge is full, Aura Mode kicks in for a few seconds and grants powerful shots, infinite stamina and faster movement. No human can play goalkeeper in this mode. An automated dummy guards each goal, and a hard enough shot stuns it.
The core-gameplay changes matter more over time for anyone starting now:
- A new "exhausted" state means Push Ball and Dribble actions performed with too little stamina use weaker versions. Out-of-stamina dribbles can no longer be chained into another dribble, though a push ball or shot can still cancel them. Sloclap calls this a first step against "0 stam dribbles."
- Goalkeepers get a long-range dive on RB+Y (R1+Triangle on PlayStation) that always deflects. The regular dive has slightly less range and always catches unless the ball hits the keeper's legs or feet.
- When two tackles hit the ball at about the same time, the ball now goes in a direction that combines both tackle trajectories. The sliding tackle hitbox is 10% larger against players in possession.
- A volley canceled on the ground now plays a cancel animation, so it's clear the input didn't go through.
Several other changes in the notes are aimed directly at newcomers, which is well timed for an Essential launch. Sloclap says the first tutorial was reworked into "a quicker, more focused tutorial on base mechanics." The Freeplay button now sits front and center on the main menu, a new Game Mode button was added, and a "high latency" icon appears when your connection passes a threshold. The patch also fixes several desync and rubberbanding issues. The notes list known Aura Striker bugs too, including a desync when a ball hits the stunned goalkeeper and then the post, and players getting stuck on the AI keeper's collision beside the goalpost.
Game Rant's "21st Essential game of 2026" count
Game Rant's headline figure comes from its own year-to-date list of Essential additions. The list has 21 dated entries, starting with DayZ and Warhammer: Vermintide 2 on April 8. It continues through a May 8 batch of older Xbox titles such as Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo: Elements of Power and Jetpac Refuelled, the three Shadowrun games on July 1, and a July 22 group including Fuzion Frenzy, Conker: Live and Reloaded and Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge. However, Blinx: The Time Sweeper appears twice, on May 8 and again on July 22. Counted as distinct games, Rematch is the 20th on that list, not the 21st. Microsoft's own posts don't give a running annual total either way.
The "first since July" claim is also disputed. Game Rant says Rematch is the first new Xbox Game Pass Essential title since July 22. Aroged's preview of the week said the opposite: In September, the cheapest service level has received two new games. Aroged didn't name them in the text we reviewed, and Microsoft's September roundup doesn't settle the question.
The exact number matters less than the pattern it describes. Essential gets batches of additions a few times a year, often back-catalog titles, and a current multiplayer game like Rematch stands out. Aroged also argues that the total number of games in the Essential subscription has been declining significantly recently, given the massive removal of items from Game Pass. That's one outlet's assessment rather than a published Microsoft figure, but it explains why individual Essential additions get attention.
Black Ops 6 and the September 30 departures, including Sifu
The same September 25 update moved Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 into Game Pass Premium. Xbox Wire lists it for cloud, console, handheld and PC as "Now with Game Pass Premium; joining Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass." Aroged notes that It took the game nearly two years after its release on Ultimate and PC to reach this level of service. Taken together, the two moves show one pattern: a game launches on the top tiers and later moves down to the cheaper ones.
The rest of September's schedule is already set. Minecraft Dungeons II arrives September 29 on Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Microsoft names eight games leaving September 30: Atomfall, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Little Nightmares 2 Enhanced Edition, Little Rocket Lab, Sifu, SOPA Tale of the Stolen Potato, Sworn and Terminull Brigade. Sifu is Sloclap's previous game, so the studio's new game joins the cheapest tier in the same week its earlier one leaves the service. Microsoft hasn't linked the two events, and the timing tells us nothing about either decision.
What this means for you
Essential subscribers who want a current online multiplayer game can install Rematch now on Xbox Series X|S or Windows PC. Anyone who hesitated over the cloud-streaming restriction should check the updated Store listing, not older copies of it. Premium and Ultimate subscribers already had the game, so nothing changes for them, except that more new players will now be in the matchmaking pool.
- Microsoft's Xbox Wire roundup confirms Rematch joined Game Pass Essential on September 25, 2026 for Cloud, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
- The current Xbox Store listing names Essential among the tiers that include cloud play. An older version of the page required a purchase to stream on Essential, so check the listing in the Xbox app if you see a purchase prompt.
- Rematch is online-only, and on console its listing points to the tier formerly called Game Pass Core for multiplayer access. Essential is the renamed Core tier.
- Patch 1.205.002 changed stamina, dribbling, goalkeeping and tackling on September 24, so returning players should expect the game to feel different from their last session.
- Aura Striker is a limited-time Season 5 mode, and paid cosmetic editions and the Blue Lock bundles are not included in any Game Pass tier.
- If you want to finish Sifu or any other game on the departure list through Game Pass, you have until September 30.
Adding Rematch is the most substantial update Essential has had in months. It gives the entry tier a current, actively updated multiplayer game instead of another batch of older titles, and it arrives just as Sloclap reworks the tutorial for new players. Season 5 runs through October 23 on Sloclap's schedule, which gives Essential subscribers about four weeks with the Blue Lock content before the limited-time mode rotates out.
