What the change does
The roadmap says the Matrix visual no longer loads and draws a whole planning dataset at once. It progressively renders the rows and columns a user needs as they scroll, expand, collapse and navigate. That should cut the amount of data the browser handles at any one moment and help the visual stay responsive on large datasets.
The listing does not say the following, so don't assume it:
- It gives no benchmark, row or column threshold, memory figure or percentage improvement.
- It states no new maximum dataset size.
- It does not claim faster data retrieval, calculation or write-back.
- It names no configuration requirement or visual version.
This is a browser-side rendering improvement. If a report is slow because of the query, the model or the write-back, virtualization may not fix it.
Where it fits
The Matrix planning visual lets users enter, adjust and allocate data directly in Power BI reports, with automatic write-back to Dataverse tables. The roadmap item covers this planning visual. It is not a general update to transactional grids elsewhere in Dynamics 365 Finance.
Existing tuning advice still applies
Microsoft's performance guidance says performance can vary depending on report design, data model size, and configuration choices. The page is marked prerelease documentation and subject to change. It also says the visual runs inside the Power BI engine and inherits its data-loading constraints, so too many returned rows can slow or break both rendering and write-back.
Microsoft's recommendations include:
- Filter the scope. Use slicers and report or page filters to restrict data to the scenario, period range, entity or business unit being planned.
- Avoid large unfiltered datasets. DirectQuery imposes strict limits on query size and intermediate results.
- Limit subtotals. Each subtotal is calculated on the fly, so keep subtotal levels to two or three where possible. Disable unused totals in the Format pane.
- Simplify formatting. Conditional formatting and cell-lock rules apply after data loads but before rendering completes. Microsoft suggests formatting only key KPIs and using static color schemes where possible.
- Keep the model lean. Avoid unnecessary columns and unused relationships. Avoid large multi-select entries that update thousands of rows at once.
- Match the storage mode to the workload. Microsoft suggests DirectQuery to Dataverse for transactional scenarios that need near real-time results. It suggests Import mode for high-volume planning data when frequent recalculation isn't needed.
- Use Entra ID authentication. Microsoft recommends it over API-based authentication for these visuals. Each visual then uses the signed-in user's Power BI credentials, with no extra API keys.
Microsoft's own troubleshooting table maps symptoms to causes. A slow-loading visual may be missing a filter measure. Frequent timeouts may come from too many subtotals or too much conditional formatting. Delayed edits may come from large data volumes or complex validation. A frozen UI in edit mode may come from too many concurrent cell locks or updates.
How administrators and planners can check it
- Pick a representative report and production-sized data. Microsoft advises testing on production-sized datasets before rollout.
- Time scrolling, hierarchy expansion and collapse, and row and column navigation before and after the feature reaches your environment.
- Hold filters, hierarchy depth, subtotals, formatting and model settings constant, so a change in one of those isn't mistaken for the effect of virtualization.
- Test edits and write-back separately. The roadmap item only describes rendering.
- If performance is still poor, apply the tuning list above before blaming the visual.
Bottom line
This is a modest but useful rendering improvement for planners who work with big matrices in a browser. Microsoft has published no measured gains, so treat any speedup as unproven until you test it in your own tenant. Good filtering and a lean model still matter most.
