For Windows creators, the appeal is straightforward: fewer utilities to juggle before recording. But “free teleprompter” needs a qualification, and an important system-requirement claim in Basic Tutorials’ launch coverage needs correcting.
What is free—and what costs extra?
Virtual Prompter’s Docked mode is free without Elgato hardware. It positions a script beneath the camera. The movable, resizable, full-screen alternative requires Virtual Prompter Pro, priced in US dollars at:
| Purchase option | Price |
|---|---|
| Monthly | $2.99 |
| Annual | $29.90 |
| Lifetime access | $49.99 |
Connecting an Elgato Prompter or Prompter XL also unlocks Floating mode.
That distinction matters more than the headline price. Start with Docked if your goal is simply to stop glancing at notes during a presentation. Consider Floating only if window placement or a separate prompting display is genuinely necessary.
Nor should near-camera text be mistaken for perfect eye contact. Basic Tutorials correctly distinguishes reading beneath a lens from reading through a beam-splitter teleprompter. The free option is a way to evaluate the workflow—not proof that dedicated hardware has become redundant.
Requirements: Windows 11, but not necessarily macOS Tahoe
Elgato lists Windows 11, in x64 or ARM64 versions, and macOS 15 Sequoia or later. That contradicts Basic Tutorials’ claim that the finished release requires macOS 26 Tahoe. Mac users should not assume they need Tahoe on the strength of that report. Windows 10 is not included in Elgato’s stated requirements.
This is a meaningful compatibility correction, not a footnote: an unnecessarily high minimum OS can make otherwise eligible users abandon an upgrade.
Voice Sync drops the NVIDIA requirement
Voice Sync 2.0 follows a speaker’s delivery, with adjustable tracking strictness. Elgato says NVIDIA graphics and Apple silicon are no longer required. Supported languages include English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Polish, and Brazilian and European Portuguese.
The hardware change is substantial. Elgato’s older Camera Hub requirements specified an NVIDIA RTX 2060 or better on Windows, or Apple M1 or better on Mac. However, German support is not itself new: Elgato’s Camera Hub 1.11 release notes already listed German. The stronger news is broader hardware eligibility, not the language’s arrival.
On Windows, Elgato says recognition uses locally downloaded language models running on the graphics card; macOS uses Apple’s speech-recognition engine. That local-processing statement concerns Voice Sync—not a blanket promise that every Studio feature operates offline.
Scripts, chat and production controls
The rebuilt editor supports Markdown, document imports and Camera Hub script migration. Operator View lets another person follow and manage the presenter’s script position, while Chat Mode combines Twitch, YouTube and Kick messages. The updated Stream Deck plugin can control recording and script scrolling while Studio is in the background.
For a small production team, these changes reduce handoffs: the person managing the script need not interrupt the presenter to establish where they are.
Camera and capture functions remain hardware-dependent. Elgato supports listed Facecam, Cam Link and capture-card models; the hardware-free promise applies to scripting and Virtual Prompter, not universal webcam recording.
Two checks before your first recording
Elgato’s documentation identifies two particularly practical migration traps:
- Choose an audio input. Cameras record video without sound until an audio source is selected.
- Release the camera from OBS first. Elgato says its camera cannot be used by both applications simultaneously; close OBS or disable its camera source before using the camera in Studio.
After moving across, make a short test recording and play it back before committing to a presentation. Check sound, framing and script readability together. A beautiful picture with missing narration is still a silent movie—usually not the intended production style.
The sensible approach is to try Docked mode before buying anything, and validate an existing recording workflow before relying on Studio for a live session. Consolidation is welcome; a successful rehearsal is better.
