A gaming setup overlooks a fantastical world of airships, mountains, and a glowing crystal above a medieval city.
Final Fantasy Resonance, Square Enix's first HD-2D Final Fantasy, is set for October 22, 2026. It is a Windows 11-only PC release, and the PC details are what matter here. The demo is already out on both the Microsoft Store and Steam, so you can test your machine before you spend anything.

Release date and platforms

Square Enix and co-developer Lancarse will release the game on October 22, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and Xbox on PC. Square Enix's North American announcement says the PC version comes through Steam and the Microsoft Store on Windows. The US suggested price is $49.99 for the standard edition and $59.99 for a Digital Deluxe Edition with extra in-game items. A $209.99 Collector's Edition adds four physical items, including an artbook, a soundtrack and a promotional Final Fantasy Trading Card Game card.

A one-day wrinkle for Steam. Square Enix's Japanese product page says only the Steam version is scheduled for October 23. It gives October 22 for the other versions. The North American announcement groups Steam with the October 22 date. Neither source explains the gap, and it may just be a time-zone artifact. If you plan to buy on Steam, check your store page for the exact unlock time. Don't assume the two PC stores unlock together.

The Japanese page also lists pre-order bonus deadlines. They fall on October 21 at 23:59 for the Microsoft Store, My Nintendo Store and PlayStation Store, and on October 23 at 00:59 JST for Steam. That is Japanese-market information, so treat the details as regional.

PC requirements

Steam's listing is unusually modest. Both tiers require a 64-bit Windows 11, DirectX 12, 8 GB of RAM and 15 GB of storage.

MinimumRecommended
Target1080p at 30 fps, Low preset1080p at 60 fps, Highest preset

Storage15 GB15 GB

The requirement most likely to catch someone out is the OS. Windows 11 is the only operating system listed. A Windows 10 machine with an otherwise capable GPU is therefore outside the official spec. The hardware bar is low, though. Notebookcheck notes the Steam version is Steam Deck Verified and uses Denuvo DRM. An independent wiki, PCGamingWiki, lists the Microsoft Store version's DRM details as not yet known, and its Steam row notes Denuvo as well. Square Enix has not confirmed whether the Microsoft Store build matches Steam on features or DRM.

The free demo

The demo is the practical way to settle compatibility questions early. Per Square Enix, it runs from the opening through Chapter 1, and save data carries over to the full game. The publisher estimates three to five hours. It is available on PlayStation 5, both Switch models, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Xbox on PC.

Square Enix confirms transfer to the full game. It does not say whether progress moves between platforms or between the Microsoft Store and Steam. Play the demo on the storefront where you intend to buy.

What the game is

Square Enix describes the game as based on the first story arc of the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, rebuilt as a console-quality RPG rather than a direct port. Notebookcheck says it follows Rain, commander of an airship squadron in the kingdom of Grandshelt, who sets out to protect the world's remaining crystals after the Earth Crystal is shattered. The latest trailer shows Sephiroth as an optional challenge with a special reward, not a story party member.

Combat is turn-based. Notebookcheck reports it uses a turn-order timeline instead of Active Time Battle, and that exploiting enemy weaknesses staggers foes, giving extra turns and Resonance attacks. Square Enix's Japanese page confirms turn-based command combat and equippable "Visions" of past series heroes, plus special attacks from resonating with them, summons and an evolved job system. The stagger details come from Notebookcheck's reporting rather than the English announcement.

Soundtrack

A four-CD original soundtrack follows on October 28. Square Enix's Japanese store lists 120 tracks, 33 of them new. Notebookcheck credits Noriyasu Agematsu as composer. That listing is a Japanese product, and its availability elsewhere is unconfirmed.

What to do before launch

  • Check that your PC runs 64-bit Windows 11 and has a DirectX 12 GPU at GTX 1650 level or better.
  • Keep 15 GB free on your drive.
  • Try the demo on the storefront you plan to use.
  • Decide between the Microsoft Store and Steam, and look at the exact unlock time on whichever you pick.
  • Don't count on a subscription or Xbox Play Anywhere. No source here supports either.

No performance testing exists yet, so the 1080p targets are Square Enix's claims and unverified.
