The schedule
Xbox is using one global unlock time instead of a midnight launch in each region. Techloy's regional breakdown puts the early-access start at 4pm BST in the UK and Ireland, 5pm CEST in Central Europe, 11am EDT on the US East Coast, and 10am CDT in US Central. For Asia-Pacific, Pure Xbox lists 12am (Fri) JST / 11pm AWST / 1am (Fri) AEST.
| Milestone | Date and time (UTC) | Who it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-install | September 29, 15:00 | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam |
| Early access | October 1, 15:00 | Premium Edition, Premium Upgrade and Collector's Edition owners |
| Worldwide launch | October 6, 15:00 | Standard Edition buyers, Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass |
Xbox Wire puts it plainly: Premium Edition players can begin playing up to five days early starting October 1. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members can join the fight starting October 6.
In short: early access opens today at 15:00 UTC for Premium owners only. The full launch and Game Pass access follow on October 6.
Who gets in today
Xbox's product page lists the Standard Edition at $69.99 and the Premium Edition at $99.99. If you already own the Standard Edition, a $30 upgrade gets you to Premium. Premium includes:
- The base game
- Up to five days of early access
- The Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack
- Five seasonal customization packs, starting with the Emergence Pack at launch
- 1,000 Iron, the game's premium currency
Game Pass Ultimate members don't have to buy the whole game. Techloy notes that Microsoft is offering a $30 Premium Edition Upgrade that adds Early Access and the Premium Edition's extras to the game. That also means a Game Pass subscription alone won't get you in today. As GG.deals puts it, simply having a Game Pass subscription won't get you in early, though.
The Game Pass tier matters too. According to Pure Xbox, the game will not be available on Game Pass Essential, Premium or the new Starter tier. Premium members should expect to get it in October 2027. If you're on one of those cheaper tiers, you're looking at a year's wait.
The Collector's Edition also includes early access. Xbox Wire's June announcement says it ships with the Xbox Series X Premium Edition on disc, plus physical collectibles. It was offered for Xbox Series X and Steam.
Don't confuse today's early access with the summer beta. The multiplayer open beta opened early to pre-order customers and Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members on August 6. That was a separate test and has nothing to do with the October 1 access.
In short: you need Premium, the $30 upgrade or the Collector's Edition to play today. Game Pass on its own waits until October 6, and only on the Ultimate and PC Game Pass tiers.
The Windows angle: shader compilation, PC fixes and known issues
Xbox says the game runs on Xbox Series X|S and on Windows 10/11 through both the Microsoft Store and Steam. Xbox Play Anywhere is supported, so you buy once and play on both console and PC, with progress and achievements carried across. Pure Xbox confirms Gears: E-Day will launch for Xbox Series X|S and PC only this October. There is no Xbox One version, whatever some store-page filters suggest.
The Coalition's September 30 launch post on the official Gears of War site has the most useful information for PC players.
Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD). The studio calls ASD a new Xbox PC app feature that cuts shader compilation time significantly across different PC hardware. If you've ever waited through a long "compiling shaders" bar on first launch, this is aimed at you. There are two catches:
- GPU support is split at launch. ASD works on AMD hardware from day one. The studio says NVIDIA support comes later in October, which is awkward given that NVIDIA is the game's exclusive PC partner.
- Steam players can benefit too. The studio says ASD may still help if the Xbox PC app is installed on your Windows 11 PC, because that lets the required shaders be pre-installed.
The NVIDIA partnership. A July 14 post on Microsoft's Windows Experience Blog called NVIDIA the game's exclusive PC partner, working on GeForce RTX integration, performance tuning and launch support. The game is built on DirectX 12. Xbox Wire published final PC specifications on September 17 and replaced the spec image on September 28. We can't give component-by-component requirements here, so check the latest chart in the Xbox PC app or on Steam before you assume your GPU is fine.
PC fixes since the beta. The Coalition lists several fixes and additions for PC:
- Graphics settings no longer reset between launches.
- Extra input delay on mouse and keyboard has been fixed.
- Missing explosion effects at Low quality settings have been fixed.
- A Max FPS setting now offers 30, 60, 90, 120, 144 or 240 fps, or Unlimited.
- Multi frame generation is supported as an option.
On every platform, you can now change the field of view, adjust HDR calibration, and turn off chromatic aberration and film grain.
Known issues to watch for this week:
- No offline play on PC until October 6. If you play on a laptop on a plane, keep it online for now.
- The game process may keep running after you quit. The studio says you can find it and end it in Task Manager. Check there if your GPU fans stay loud or your next launch fails.
- Memory problems in long sessions. Playing the whole game without reloading a checkpoint or restarting may cause memory issues. If an encounter or objective won't progress, reload a checkpoint.
- Benchmark numbers read low. The benchmark's performance overlay doesn't count generated frames, so it can report a lower FPS than you're really getting.
In short: install the Xbox PC app if you can, even if you play on Steam, and update your GPU drivers. Expect the four issues above during the early-access window.
Day-one preparation checklist
- Check your entitlement. Make sure the Premium purchase or upgrade has gone through before 15:00 UTC. Games.gg advises buyers to confirm your Premium Edition or Upgrade purchase is complete well before the October 1 start time.
- Leave room for patches. As one preload guide points out, pre-installing the base package on September 29 still leaves patch downloads closer to October 1 and October 6.
- Check your Game Pass tier if you plan to play online. Xbox's terms say online campaign co-op, Horde Siege and Versus all need a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer.
- Don't rush into ranked play. The Coalition says Versus Ranked opens on October 13, a week after launch.
What you're getting
The game is a prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War. You play as a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago when the Locust Horde first breaks through on Sera. The campaign can be played:
- Solo
- In two-player split-screen, which is console only
- In online co-op for up to four players
Multiplayer has two main modes. Horde Siege is a bigger take on the classic wave-survival mode, with Assault, Marksman, Medic and Breacher classes. Players team up in four-person squads, and several squads share objectives. Wikipedia describes Horde Siege as a new twelve-player cooperative mode. Versus is the competitive mode, with 4v4 matches and Ranked and Social playlists. The game is built on Unreal Engine 5, and Xbox advertises 4K resolution at up to 60fps on a compatible display.
Season 1, "Emergence," starts with early access today and runs until December 1, according to The Coalition. It's planned to include Halloween, 20 Years of Gears and Thanksgibbing events. The studio says at least five post-launch seasons are planned, and November 7, the franchise's 20th anniversary, will bring a gift for players. The Coalition also admits some favorite features won't be there at launch, including meat shields, chainsaw duels and private lobbies, because the game was rebuilt from scratch.
The bottom line
Paying more to play early is now normal for Xbox's big releases. Five days is long enough to settle into the campaign and learn the maps before the Game Pass crowd arrives. The trade-off is that early-access buyers are also the first to hit launch problems, like the issues listed above and NVIDIA owners waiting on ASD support until later in October.
If you're on Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass and in no hurry, waiting until October 6 is a perfectly sensible choice. If you need to play today, the $30 upgrade is the cheapest way in. Either way, today is not the full launch. That comes on October 6.
Update: Launch-day patch targets campaign blockers and multiplayer issues (October 6, 2026)
The Coalition has reportedly released a global-release patch for Gears of War: E-Day on October 6, according to TrueAchievements. The published patch notes list stability, performance and hardware-compatibility improvements, alongside targeted fixes for campaign progression and multiplayer sessions.
For Windows players, the most relevant changes include improved Xbox authentication handling when a system clock differs significantly from the correct time, better online-session stability, and a fix for Versus Social matches becoming stuck on “Waiting for players.” The notes do not specify particular PC hardware configurations benefiting from the compatibility improvements.
Campaign fixes address objectives failing to update or start in Act 2 Chapter 2 and Act 4 Chapter 1. The patch also addresses one cause—not necessarily every cause—of the Act 4 Chapter 2 Power Station defense failing to finish after all visible enemies are defeated. Horde Siege fixes target unfinishable Siege Blitz Secure objectives and a missing extraction helicopter; Versus gets a fix for bombs becoming stuck during defusal in Demolition.
These notes do not explicitly confirm fixes for the previously reported lingering PC process, long-session memory problems or benchmark frame-counting limitation. Early-access players encountering those issues should not assume this patch resolves them.
Update: Gears of War: E-Day is now listed as available through Game Pass (October 7, 2026)
GameSpot’s October Game Pass roundup now lists Gears of War: E-Day as available on Cloud, console, and PC. That confirms the October 6 Game Pass release window described earlier has passed and adds cloud streaming to the listed platforms.
For Windows users, PC Game Pass access is now live rather than pending. GameSpot’s listing does not clarify whether availability extends beyond the Ultimate and PC Game Pass tiers previously identified, so subscribers on lower-cost plans should still verify the install or cloud-play entitlement in the Xbox app before downloading.
